Hello everyone, greetings from the bastion of freedom and righteousness, Illinois. I joined this forum because I'm seeking advice from the aficionados. I recently bought my first revolver, an NAA mini. I love the thing but I think it's time for a "real" revolver 😅 I've noticed now that S&W have started offering no lock models the locked ones have gone down in price. The round butt heavy barrel model 10s are now around $600 which is right at the limit of what I'm willing to spend. Would I be better off buying a new locked model for that price or trying to find a pre lock one used? I am unfamiliar with S&W pricing and what to expect in terms of quality for $600. Let me know what you think!

Welcome from NC. An older smith or any quality revolver usually trumps the newer wiz bang version imo provided the bore is good, timing is good and it has a correct lockup. Good hunting,

And a Hound Dawg Howdy to you from SC! :D

I have DEFINITE opinions on that. My first choice would be a pre-lock gun, in as good condition as you can afford. In fact, my newest revolver is a 1980 686. I'm good, however on anything they made up until the locks appeared in 2001.

I own both versions, locked and no lock and see absolutely no difference with the lock in the unlocked position. Both are highly accurate and have great triggers. I am known as being very persnickety. While the ultimate decision is yours to make, I would go for the cheaper priced version and use the difference to buy or load ammo. :)
