Help bring this 586-1 back to life

I recently scored this 586-1 (M stamp) for $250. It's missing the rear sight and original grips. It seems the rear sight screw is 2" from the base. eBay has some for $80-$120. What rear sight do I need?

Pretty sure the grip is a "square butt". I'd like to pick up some imitation wood grips for this gun. Amazon has some for $70

K frame target grips will fit the L frame as well.

Usually there will be grips for sale over in the Classifieds. You might be able to get the genuine article for a little more than an imitation.

get the grips from S&W. I have those on my 686-4 and they are beautiful.
Give a Numrich a call for a stock update. Also call S&W you may get lucky again ..

The proper rear sight will have a square (as opposed to rounded) front edge to the sight leaf. The position of the hole in the leaf where the attachment screw threads into the top strap changed over time; I recall the one that fits this gun would have this hole farther back than the older style. Good luck in your search.

If you intend to shoot it much with magnums you may find you prefer the Hogues that are on it to the targets it wore when new. Of course wood looks nicer.

Set the hole in the sight over the hole in the frame. There is some standoff from the front of the sight and the end of the frame. Then show us the picture.

It's likely that it's closer to 1.940 or 1.950. If that's the case, I have some that will fit. I would trade you the one you have for one that will fit. You can specify black or white outline and the height of the leaf you want. I will make one up the way you want it.

I don't know if the information S&W gave me was correct. I called them just now and they said I need part number 223310000, but that is a round edge when the sight channel on my revolver is square. I think maybe the 586 switched to round on the -4, but I have the -1. I'm interested in the trade and can get this sight out to you today

The sights with the long tang in front of the screw hole are for 2" barreled guns. On those guns the rear sight tang meets up with the front sight base.
