Help identifying a 629?

Hi, new to smith & wesson, I came upon a nice looking firearm, it doesnt have the rear sight though. I want to get a new one and there are so many options, can someone help identify exactly what firearm I have so I can get the correct rear sight? I did some googling and was referred to this forum and to ask here. Any help is appreciated, thank you.

Any modern rear sight with the rounded front tang will fit your gun. It's hard to tell from the photos but some of the -3 guns had a sight that was longer than standard. If your gun uses this sight they are not to be found. The new sight will fit with a slight gap in the front. I solved the problem by mounting a red dot sight.

Thanks for the info. What pictures could I take that would help narrow that down, and if i wanted to go the rds route, what would I search for the mount? 629-4 rds mounts? -3 hole mounts?

ETA: It looks like this would work for a standard rear sight, correct?

Check the measurement from the center of the screw hole to the radius. I get .445 on a spare sight that I have. Raptor Engineering and Alchin both make fine bases for the Burris red dot and others. The sight you linked to will also work well. You may need a taller front sight blade with it. I'm sure they can tell you that. Looking at the stamp on the yoke Weigand had a hand in your gun. Not sure what they would have done but I would think the action should be pretty sweet.

Luckily yours is a 629-4. The -3's use a unique rear sight, pretty hard to find. Midway USA has a pile of rear sights. The rear sight is held in by 1 screw, and the rear part of the sight has a screw also that sits in slot on the back of the frame and when you turn the elevation screw it brings the sights up and down. Those other 2 holes you see on your frame are for a scope base. The scope base uses 3 screws to hold it to the gun. So 1 screw is the main one that holds the rear iron sight on the gun, the other screw sets in a slot and adjusts the height of the sight. Hope this helps. Also I will add any of the new style rear sights for the S&W 629 will work. If I am wrong, someone correct me. Like I said Midway USA has a lot of S&W sights.

Thanks for all of the suggestions, folks. I actually had a good laugh from looking up rear sights for this gun, and from this thread. I actually know the Allchin family, my best friend dated his older daughter, she's a good friend. Years ago she invited us to go shoot skeet with the rest of her family, it was very fun. What a small world.

Give S&W customer service a call. They may be able to hook you up with one. One of the changes with the 69-4 was to drill and tap the frame, hence all the screw holes. They also changed the rear sight leaf at the same time. Yes, I think your best bet is to check with the factory and see if you can obtain the correct one there.
