Hi guys, after my First presentation post (thank you for the hospitality!), I'm here to ask your help.
As a collector i focused on three areas: s&w revolvers, sig semiauto (some type of p210, p226 and p220) and ex-ordinance semiauto (STG 57, STG58, AK, COLT ecc).
I expose them in a dedicated area in my home study, each One next to his brief history.
I'd like to now, if possibile, the exact year of production of theese 4 revolvers, because at the moment i only know a range but not the correct year.

My 629-1 barrel 8 3/8" has a n.matr. AFA2XXX
My 29-5 barrel 8 3/8" has a n.matr. BHH9XXX
My 629-6 barrel 7,5" (perf.center) has a n.matr HAA2XXX
My 686-6 barrel 5" (perf.center ed."Rappy") has n.matr. CME1XXX

I try to add some photos, if u Need some other details tell me!
Thank u for every help given!

Ciao Stefano!

Below are the best I could find for approximating production. If you happen to have the original boxes with labels, those will tell us much more.

My 629-1 barrel 8 3/8" has a n.matr. AFA2XXX 1984
My 29-5 barrel 8 3/8" has a n.matr. BHH9XXX 1991
My 629-6 barrel 7,5" (perf.center) has a n.matr HAA2XXX ?
My 686-6 barrel 5" (perf.center ed."Rappy") has n.matr. CME1XXX 2009

Thank u, perfect, u gave me all the right informations!

I could post some pic of the boxes, but unfortunately the only One i missed original Is the 626-6 perf.cent (i have a s&w box but not HIS original metallic performance center box)

I think it's around 2010, but i'm not sure.

Anyway, thank u again!

If you tell us the Spec. Ord. number on the labels, we can convert those into the precise dates they were packaged. And are you certain HAA2 is correct?

Yes, it's correct, as u can see in the attached photo.
Unfortunately, even if It has all his documents, this One Is the only that doesn't have his original aluminum box (at least i think It should have had one as a performance center revolver), so i can't have any other info besides n.matr.

Anyway, thank u guys!

Hi jeppo, here the photos of the details of every revolver.
About the 629 PC whitout the original box i have the label with all the data, as u can see.

Another question, about this model: in the label Is written 6,5", but this model should have a 7,5"barrel, right? (Later i'll measure, but i'm sure.it was a 7,5"...). May u confirm something with the date reported on the label?
Thank u guys!

SWCA

If you were to join the SWCA, info in the "downloads" section from the title box, you would be able to gain access to the SWCA side of this forum. In there is a thread in which you can ask Mr Jinks for a ship date on each gun and he will reply with a month/year date. You will be allowed 1 request a week.

Ciao again Stefano,

At this point, I should explain something that may disappoint you. Many collectors place extra value on guns that come complete as delivered by Smith and Wesson. This means any tools, documents and what’s often referred to as the “correct box” (which means the actual original box displaying the original label where the serial number matches the gun). I mention this because, sadly, it isn’t unknown for unscrupulous sellers to create fake labels and attach them to any box they have. Often, boxes have been discarded by owners that never imagined they would add to the value of an eventual sale.

It appears to me that only two of your boxes are “correct ” (original). The other two were for the same model guns but the serial numbers do not match your guns. The serial numbers for your four guns all have 7 characters that begin with 3 letters followed by 4 numerals.

The 29-5, with serial number BHH9492, was packaged on 8 October of 1992 (this is the significance of the 2282 you see on the label).

The 686-6, with serial number CME1189, was packaged on 17 April of 2009. (9107).

Does this help explain why one of your guns has a barrel of a different length than shown on the label?

Saluti!

Hi jeppo, thank u so much for all theese informations.
I didn't pay attention of 629-1 box that has a label of a 629-6, Sorry, i should have been clear It wasn't original, and at this point Is clear also the wrong inch barrel for the other One, that according to the label seems to be a 629 Classic and not PC as it Is really.

Do u think this fact has a relevant impact in their value, assuming that the revolvers are perfect as well?

Anyway, thank u again!

Here in the US, many collectors will pay more when the gun comes with the original box. How much more depends on the collector and the gun. A perfect condition 1930s. Registered Magnum, complete and with the original box, would be worth a fortune. The same gun without the box; a slightly smaller fortune. 😂.

We can probably say that the older and more rare is the gun, the more value is added for the correct box. For sure, the most important thing is the value of the gun itself.

If you have some time, perhaps you could answer a question for me. A long time ago, an Italian colleague lived here and worked in our office. He told me he wanted to purchase a handgun and take it back to Italy. As I recall, the permissions and paperwork for this were heavy and complicated. What is the situation today for handgun collectors in Italy?
