thinking about the Governor for back-packing use. I like the idea of a portable 410 shotgun stoked with premium personal defense buckshot. Am I wrong!?!

Personally, I don't think you are wrong at all! I picked up a Governor some months ago and have shot .45 ACP, .45 Colt, and all grades of .410 shotshells in the thing. They are all literally a blast. The .45 ACP 230 gr. ball round seems to be the most accurate but that my simply be because that round recoils the least. I like mine and bought it for exactly the reason you cite, to be a companion gun when I'm in the woods or hunting.

like steviec...i love mine...haven't had it too long but it shoots great with all types of 410 shells,45acp and 45 colt....in fact i just received a holster for it today from heavy duty leather co.over in hickory,NC...fits like a glove

Too big and limiting for me. In my view the Governor is a solution looking for a problem. If I want to shoot .45 ACP, I'll grab my 1911. In my experience one item that does many things does none of them well. I backpack where large critters roam, so usually pack a .41 or a .44.

2 or 3 years age there was a test in SWAT Magazine of either the Judge or Governor (I think the Judge). The testing revealed some serious practical ballistic warts that need to be considered.

As big and bulky as these 410/45 guns are, I believe a short shotgun (legal of course) is almost as easy to lug around and much more effective. A good .44 or .45 (I like the vaquero) on the belt or in a shoulder holster makes more sense to me also. My opinion only.[/B]

I got real interested after seeing some videos and reading a few reviews. I'm a collector and shooter of weird weapons, this falls right into that category. I'll report back...

I don't get the fascination with these things.

They are huge! They are clumsy. They are ineffective.

410's in shotguns are expert's guns for small birds at short shotgun range. Think 6oz quail at 25 yards or less.

From a 3 inch barrel, after crossing the cylinder/barrel gap, you've lost considerable velocity. They are difficult to hit anything with beyond arms lenght and if you hit, you have little penetration.

In 45, you have a huge revolver. It has to be huge: it has chambers long enough to accommodate a 2.5 or 3 inch shotgun shell.

Aside from being huge, it has a tremendous amount of freebore which results in loss of hundreds of fps on velocity.

So now you have a huge 45 revolver that shoots several hundred feet per second less than published velocities.

It might be effective at arm's length against a man, but wouldn't be something I'd want to lug around. I can't imagine thinking it would be much use in bear country. I don't even think it would be much use for potting a grouse or rodent for dinner.

It seems more a tribute to slick marketing than anything else.

Just my opinion of course!

Who cares, it's going to be more fun than a barrel of monkeys. Something entirely different. Also, the bigger the better...

these should give the target a serious jolt...

My thoughts are for a multipurpose handgun ,a 454 casuall. The shoot 45 long colt or 45 acp.
Carry a stoeger coach gun with a sling for a scatter gun.

I own a Governor, and I freaking Love the Revolver! It's my favorite gun to strap on when I walk in the woods. Love it Love it Love it!

I think you are going to be surprised how non-serious the jolt will actually be. The muzzle velocity will be significantly less than that produced by a .41 magnum. Well, to each his own. After you try it out, let us know what you think. Reviews on these firearms that I've seen are all lukewarm at best.

For now I'll carry mine in a fanny-pack. Can't wait to shoot it, especially with 410's...
