I just bought an SD40 for my first gun but I don't know much about guns yet besides safety and how to shoot but I'm trying to learn and could use some help & advice! I wanted to get a guide rod laser but I don't believe they make one though I've been told that this gun is almost identical to the Glock, true or false? I've also heard that I could use some Glock aftermarket parts for my SD40 such as a Glock guide rod laser? I like my gun but it does have some recoil to it and as far as accuracy seems to shoot low! What are some cheaper options to help with the recoil and accuracy? I also want to add a light and laser but adding as little bulk as possible. Any other options and knowledge about anything is greatly appreciated as well and thank you!

guide rod

stay away from those lasers rods, just learn to shoot the gun with it's sights.if you get dependant on the laser it might be dead when you need it and then so would you.

True you make a very good point! I don't want it for accuracy all the time I thought it would be good if I ever was in a situation for example in Florida where the guy shot the man beating up that cop that it would be helpful in a close proximity situation in making sure the wrong person doesn't get shot. I had every intention on practicing and being very accurate on my own but the gun seems to shoot low and really just off horribly but when I shot my friends .45 Glock I had no problem hitting the target and his gun shot with way less recoil and a lot smoother! I noticed the sights on mine look extremely cheap and in my researching I've learned a new spring kit and different sights could help a lot with both the accuracy and recoil, am I right? Any suggestions at all?

Welcome to the Forum

Lasers are a fantastic training tool. You get impressive visual feedback of how steady you are and how smoothly you pull the trigger.

They can rapidly improve a novice's shooting ability as he/she learns what works and does not work. I have lasers on roughly half of my teaching firearms just for this reason

They also help the more advanced shooters to quickly hone his/her point shooting skills.

While not a huge concern, they will allow much more accurate shooting from cover (barricades, corners) during those times that you can not look straight down the firearm

Should you rely 100% on them? Of course not. You should not rely 100% on anything. Man made products fail. Front sights shoot off, magazines drop their cartridges, night sights lose their tritium vials, cylinder hands break, etc.

Never wait for the batteries to go dead, change the batteries on your birthday and you will probably be in good shape throughout the year. Kind of like how we take care of our smoke detectors batteries

While a Glock guide rod might or might not fit an SD, the laser guide rod probably won't work. The on/off switch is usually in the takedown levers.

You can see the on button located in the lever on the lower firearm. It can be activated from either side. Not sure where the switch is on the SD version

Just because they no longer make the guide rod laser for your firearm does not mean you can not buy one. They often turn up used on the various forums and auctions sites. You could even post a WTB right here on SmithWesson-Forum.Com

I would be very hesitant to use a glock laser guide rod in the SD. The guide rod in the SD abuts against plastic tabs, and the tabs can be broken. If the tabs break the gun won't work.

There is at least one thread, within the last couple of months, concerning this problem. So a little research can save you from having issues. If you want a light and laser, there are combos that mount on the exterior rail.

Thank you both very much for your knowledge! I think I'm going to try and find a light/laser combo because it's definitely a cheaper and easier route. Are there any other minor upgrades that I can do to make this a smoother and all around better shooting gun?
