...got a piece left over! Watched the video and was able to take off the lock without too much trouble, but there was a small silver pin about 1/4 inch long left over. I was unable to find where it goes. Here's a picture of it:

The gun is a 342 M&P 38spl.

Also, now that the lock is gone, do I live with the small hole in the frame where the lock used to be, or is there some clever way to fill it?

Did you pull the bolt off the gun. If you did that pin goes back on the rear end of the bolt.

Don't worry about the tiny hole on the side, too small to worry about. Check out the faqs above for more pictures.

Thanks for your reply...first time taking apart a revolver. What is a bolt, and do you have a picture?

The bolt is that bar that attaches the thumb piece. It opens the cylinder...
there is a spring and plunger that fit inside it. I think that pin is your bolt plunger.
see the 500 bolt above

No...the plunger seems to work fine. I was very careful with it. This piece seemed to come out when I took off the side plate.

I don't know squat about this but find it fascinating. My probably "stupid" question, just from looking at that 3D illustration, is if that pin (97) came out, is there a chance that the firing pin and spring (37 and 38) have come out also? Does 97 keep 37 & 38 in place?

Good luck...when I took some of my guns apart the hammer block fell out and it took me a while to figure it out. 500 knows his stuff and is very knowledgeable.

The pin falls out sometimes as the side plate is tapped off, or if gun is turned over when the side plate is removed. The firing pin won't fly if the pin is pulled. You normally have to point the gun upwards or fiddle with it to get the firing pin and FP spring out. If your lucky the firing pin didn't move, so just putting the pin back will get it assembled.
Also make sure the firing pin is indexed correctly and down all the way or the pin may not push in the frame.

It looks exactly like part#97...but #97 is still there. When I took the plate off, I found it loose and it fell out. I am unable to see anywhere where it may fit.

Is it possible it was an extra part?

There is at least some possibility that it is the lanyard retaining pin which fell out as soon as you took the grips off. Look in the frame for the hole which accommodates a pin which lies across the lanyard channel in the bottom rear of the grip part of the frame, if there is one at all. If there isn't, my answer isn't the right one.

That was it! I am sooo relieved. Thanks!!!:D:D:D

RE: your question about filling the hole..

Do a search for "The Plug"

Bullseye smith, one of the forum members here came up with a slick way to get rid of the hole.
