Just got my first S&W. Got a 642 with the lock. Want to do something to the sights. Would love to have an XS installed, but I don't have the pinned on sight. What can I do? I thought of some sort of paint. Green front sight perhaps? Anything that anyone can show me? Also, what about coloring the outline of the rear sight in black?

BTW, I read about everyone complaining about the lock. What is the big deal about that. I don't lock it, probably never will. It doesn't interfere with anything.

I have a 638 w/the lock purchased last year during the $50 rebate. While I don't care for the lock I've put many +P Buffalo Bore through it (my attempt to get the gun to lock up) without any problem. The lock, IMHO, is a non issue. By the way, Buffalo Bore +P hangs up in the cylinder after shooting when you go to reload so I've changed to CoreBon DPX 110 gr +P.

As to the sights, I found some orange glow paint at WalMart. It will take a few applications so be patient, but it does the job. I reapply my sight paint after each range session and it now seem to adhere just fine.

Hope that helps.

Bright model paint is often used on sights, with orange, red, and white popular. Pick your color and paint away after you degrease the metal. If you decide you don't like it, solvent takes it right off.
I buy the little bottles and put a drop on with a toothpick.

Different people with different vision use an assortment of colors to help them see the sights better. I tried several combinations of hot pink, billious green, flourescent orange and screaming canary yellow before settling on this arrangement. I use fingernail polish, very durable stuff and still easy to remove if you decide you don't like the color.

BTW, I also have A 642 with the lock, and I consider it a non-issue.
