Good evening everyone. I have a 1947 K22. When I pull the hammer back, the gun locks up perfectly on each cylinder, however, in double action, every now and then the cylinder is free to spin. I called S&W and they won't take my firearm in for repair. That is fine, it's an opportunity for me to learn something. Any thoughts on where to start? I was initially thinking it might need a new cylinder stop/spring but it could be the timing (new hand?). Appreciate any suggestions.

I'd start with a really good cleaning of the internals.Lots of guys used wd40 for oiling and cleaning back in the day and that stuff gets gummy and eventually hardens

Cylinder stop spring, open it up is there a possibility of rust inside?

Thanks for the help. I think once I give it a good cleaning it will be okay. Pretty insane how gunked up this revolver is. Almost like a thick oil.

Open cylinder push down on stop does it jam up or feel real easy to push

Clean it and check the spring on cylinder stop. Make sure there is no gunk in any of the notches.

If that does not fix it, check the front face of the stop to make sure it isn't rounded. Also. look at the little ramps that lead into the notches in the cylinder. Occasionally one will get a tiny bump right before the notch. This can cause the cylinder stop to bounce sown a bit and not stop cylinder.

Got the revolver back together, that was a touch nerve racking. Problem solved. Thanks for all the help, I suppose now that it's fixed I should have thought about a full cleaning. The spring looked like it was tarred.

Great you learned something. Taking one apart and getting it back together is easier every time you do it.

Yeah.. Feels good to get it back together. Surprisingly, it wasn't too difficult. I had a bit of a struggle getting the hammer block to line up and get the face plate back on. Glad I figured it out, something satisfying about doing it yourself.

Thanks again
