Guys, I recently posted several topics asking about various .22 rifles. My goal was to find a handy woodsman’s fieldsman’s piece for plinking, squirreling, rabbiting, toting, and just plain SHOOTIN’! Well after a tremendous amount of research and digesting the many wonderful posts from members here, I made my decision. My rifle would be a Henry .22 Frontier model! :D

Well I just got back to Nevada from a trip home and today I called all around the city using the dealer locator for suggestions on the Henry Repeating Arms website. After quite the search, the Bass Pro downtown had one left in stock new in the box (not a display model).

I rushed down there and after the longest most drawn out gun purchase of my life (took close to two hours, tons of computer and paperwork issues, never again) I walked out of the store floating, with my new Henry model H001T lever action rimfire in hand!! Took it home, gave it a quick cleaning focusing on the bore, and I was off to the range!

Guys, this gun is AWESOME!!!

I fired close to 300 rounds of CCI Standard 40 gr. and Federal bulk pack 36 grain. Had just one failure to fire and I chalked it up to a dud round as the firing pin hit was very deep and strong. Other than that the action just digested round after round with perfect cycling and guys it’s true what they say about the buttery action on these, just awesome!!

The trigger is good, I’d say close to 4 lbs, just a tiny hint of creep but breaks super clean and overall very acceptable. I wasn’t shooting for accuracy, mostly offhand, just testing the function of the gun, but it managed a good little group from the CCI Standard at 15 yards from a hasty benched semi rapid fire string. Another guy was there with his son and commented on the beauty of the rifle, and I let him and his boy shoot it and they were both smiling and happy!

Fit and finish are superb. Really nice figured piece of American black walnut on the buttstock especially. Fine bluing and detailing on the barrel, quality all steel sights with high visibility gold bead front sight and white diamond rear buckhorn. For the price, I can scarcely think of any other gun as beautiful or well finished. The balance of the gun is excellent with just enough “hang” from the octagon barrel for steadiness but the gun is still very light and handy. Balance point is directly behind the rear sight so it’s a pleasure to carry by holding the receiver. It does not at all feel like a toy or “kids gun”. I plan to get the rifle out again in the next couple days for a proper bench session trying different ammo and fine tuning the sights once I find the right load.

The only bad thing that happened today was when loading the magazine on the last few minutes before closing time at the range, I accidentally let go when pushing the magazine tube in and it shot itself a few yards in front of my table! :o No fault of the gun, just a bit of embarrassing operator error!

Guys, can you tell I’m pleased?? Just a treasure of a rifle and I left the range in ecstasy, satisfied that my search was over and that I’d made the right choice. So, if anyone out there is looking for a GREAT .22 companion rifle, check them out guys! Got to love that slogan too:

”Made in America or Not Made at All”

Take care, guys!

Jay, thanks for the write up....looks like a great choice. I have always admired Henry's motto, and one of my friends bought, I believe, the same model you chose. He is very fond of it, but I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet.

Best Regards, Les

Jay, I purchased the same Henry Frontier model about six months ago. They are great little rifles for the money. I changed out the front (fiber optic) and rear sight (Marble "Bullseye") on mine.

Great rifle and not terribly expensive, the more you shoot it the better it will get! Smooths out very quickly as well.....

Get more ammo and go enjoy this fine rifle!

That's a very nice rifle, and thank you for the write-up. I just love a nice lever action. I'm going to have to try one of those Henry's rifles! My 39A may get jealous, but he gets shot and played with on occasion, so it's all good! Congrats and have fun. Is there a place outside of Vegas where you can just walk out into the desert and legally shoot a rifle just to have fun? I've always been curious about that. I'm the type of guy that would go to Vegas and take a ride out into the wilderness just to look under rocks for snakes & critters! (I don't play cards or anything!) I wouldn't shoot a rattler or anything, but maybe set up a few beverage cans to kill.

Yes there are places like that, I just got back from one a few hours ago! But they are few and far between and several have been closed down due to litter. Don’t think you can just walk out into the desert anywhere and shoot, it’s illegal only unless at a designated shooting spot. I go to the one south of town. It’s over a 45 minute drive for me so I usually just go to the outdoor range, only about 15 minutes away and a great facility (Clark County range).

I shot the Henry today out there at LEAST 500 more times! Shot 200 rounds of shorts and 100 rounds of longs and tons of Federal bulk pack and some Aguila Interceptors. I was shooting at bottles and cans and all sorts of trash out there that people dump, which is sad, but it makes for good targets!!

Guys, shorts out of this thing are very quiet and you can hear the ricochets without ear pro and it sounds JUST like the cowboy movies!! SO much fun!!

Super reliable, I had one bobble with the shorts which I’m pretty sure I short stroked, and one failure to fire from the cheap bulk pack, but overall next to 0 problems!

I LOVE THIS GUN!!!

The only Henry I have (so far) is a Big Boy Steel H012 in .41 magnum. I couldn't find a Marlin in .41 mag, that I could afford anyway, so I bought the only other option, a Henry.

I am very pleased with their quality and attention to fit & finish. While I would have prefered to have the barrel more finely polished before bluing, it is very evenly done. The action is easy to operate without any hitches or glitches.

I think Henry is doing things right, and "Made in America" just seals the deal for me. Congratulations on the new 22, I guess I might as we look for one myself. My Marlin 39A 22 is every bit as heavy as a center fire rifle. I like your field report Jay. Sounds like a winner!

I have a Golden Boy and also changed out the rear sight for a Marble "bullseye" peep sight. It works great and is much less expensive than a Skinner peep sight.

And if you should have an issue with your rifle later on, Henry also has the best customer service. What the owner of Henry Repeating Rifles, Anthony Imperato, says on the Henry website about customer satisfaction is absolutely true, I know as I experienced it first hand when I emailed him about a wavy finish quality issue on the receiver cover of my Golden Boy. I had a new one so fast it made me dizzy, along with his apology for the "troubles".

Guys I had another range session last night, another couple hundred Federal bulk packs and this time no misfires! The gun just runs and runs, so cool!! Tonight I decided to mount my dad’s vintage Bushnell Sportview 3-9x32 with classy old school see-through mounts. This scope used to be on dad’s Ruger 10/22 since the early 80s but a few years ago he had a “tacti-cool” phase and he took it off and gave it to me, replacing it with a red dot. Here it is with my trusty Buck 110 and spare .22 ammunition pouch:

Going to try and get some groups up this weekend. I’ve got some CCI Standard and shorts I’d like to try, plus Aguila interceptors, which are the most powerful 40 grain .22LR available.

Stay tuned guys! :)

Guys okay, I handled a new in box Browning BL22 Grade II at the Sportsman’s Warehouse in Las Vegas today.

It did NOT impress!

Sadly it appears Browning is using pressed checkering. It looks absolutely hideous!! The trigger was also just horrible. About twice what my Henry pulls, and admittedly my Henry doesn’t have a match trigger but it’s FAR better than the Browning I sampled. Overall fit and finish were subpar. I gave it back to the salesman, my faith in the Henry fully strengthened.

But I DID get to handle a Henry “Small Game” carbine with factory installed Skinner peep sights. Guys, suffice it to say I will be installing them VERY soon on this gun!! The only low point of my Henry is the rear semi buckhorn sight. The U-notch aperture is super tiny and visibility of the front sight is poor. It’s just not a great sight picture. The Skinners seem like a total winner, what great peep sights and they reminded me of the M16A2 I trained on in the Air Force.

I need to send my receiver cover to get drilled and tapped for the Skinners!!
