Students in Charleston are seen fishing in a pond during school hours. They're getting physical education credits through a class called Outdoor Pursuits. The only one of its kind in the state, the class has been offered at West Ashley for the past four years, with hands-on activities that teach all aspects of outdoor life in South Carolina.
Kids learn skills ranging from boating and backpacking to gun safety.
Just a little sign that things might be going the other way. Why have this in schools. Well, one thing is that kids used to learn fishing, backpacking, gun safety just as a matter of growing up. It isn't that way any more. These are very useful skills and I about whoop at the idea of teaching gun safety rather than kids getting hold of gun and learning the hard way that people get killed carelessly handling them.
