herter's ammo

anyone had use of herter's ammo.? I am able to get some here in .38spl., and have not seen it before. It's at cabela's.

If its steel case its Russian. Made by Wolf ir Tula, i cant remember which. Youre gonna get polarizing views on it. People either love it or hate it. I have never had a problem with it.

If its brass its made by Blazer

I've been shooting some in my Uberti's. in the lever action rifle, it is fairly accurate. Not so in the SAA.

Only used the brass ones and has been just fine

I've used both the brass and aluminum cased Herter's in my M&P40 Pro. Had 4 FTEs with the aluminum cases. Had to use a rod in each time to clear the case from the chamber. No problems with the brass ones at all.

The brass 38 Specials and 44 Magnums I bought looked for all the world like they were made by S&B. The bullet jackets are the same color as S&B, the packaging is the same, and the headstamp is the same font.

I've shot two boxes of Herters 38 special, and most of a box of 44 magnum. I've had no issues with either.

unless Cabelas has changed suppliers (which I hear they have in the past):

The stuff in the tan or wood grain looking box is the russian steel cased stuff

the stuff in the gray box is the aluminum cased stuff made by blazer

the stuff in the black box is the brass cased stuff made by Sellier & Belliot

I am pretty sure the boxes say who made them - at least for the gray & black boxes

In the past , I've seen Herter's packaged brass cased ammo bearing Fiocchi (GFL) , Prvi Partizan (PPU) and Sellier & Bellot (S&B) headstamps.

Lately , I've seen it with HERTERS headstamp.

I purchased 38spl Herter's from Cabelas in the black box. What I found was they are clean burning. In fact when I deprimed the cases I found very clean primer pockets. The brass were head stamped Herter' but I did find two cases with the S&B head stamp.

I'm surprised the Herters name is still around. I thought they went belly-up back in the 1980's. Is this the same outfit or did someone (Cabelas maybe) acquire the name? Herters used to be a force to be reckoned with, back in the day, when they made reloading gear and even sold their own proprietary gun and ammo - the single-action 401 Powermag.

yes herters went under sometime in the 80's - pretty sure cabelas acquired the name & I think they use it as a house brand - not sure if they also distribute it to other stores

I've bought a bunch of the .223 from Cabela's. Works like a charm in my Mini-14. A little dirty, on a par with other Russian ammo, but no worse than most Remington green-box.

Yep! Herters was the Cabela's of the 50s-60s. Shooting , hunting , fishing , camping , boating , they had it all. Guns and ammo from the best European makers. Reloading tools were from Redding and Lyman.


As for their single action revolvers. The guns were made by JP Sauer , the ammo by Norma. The .401 is a true 10mm magnum. Luckily I squirreled away a good supply of brass. Jacketed bullets for the 38/40 WCF can sometimes still be found , but cast bullets serve well.

The Herter's name was resurrected a few years ago, forgot who bought the brand name, but it was only to ride the coat tails of brand recognition.

Cabela's seem to be the ones capitalizing the most on the Herters named ammo, but I've seen it being sold elsewhere.

I haven't used the handgun ammo yet, but will be picking up a box of the aluminum cased nyclad-type .45s tomorrow.

I have had excellent results with the Herters shotgun shells.

I purchased some of the Herter's Select Grade (brass case) in 380 from Cabela's a few weeks back.

Shot one box of it in a brand new LCP without issue. Did not seem underpowered, and was accurate enough for my purposes.
