Thousands of people have been injured and eight have died when pagers carried by members of Hezbollah exploded throughout Lebanon today. I'm no expert on exploding pagers, but I'm guessing the Israelis figured out how to access them, and sent out a program that caused their lithium ion batteries to overheat and explode.

It's kind of scary because if this programming technology gets extended to cell phones, we'll all end up going back to bag phones powered by lead-acid batteries.

I have seen nothing about this, but I cannot fathom how someone could remotely cause Li-ion batteries in a pager to explode. I also thought that using pagers had fallen out of favor long ago. I have seen no one using a pager for a very long time, at least not in the USA.

Details remain unclear.
Seems that they switched to pagers out of concern the Israelis could track their phones
Some suggest that Israel intercepted their pager shipments and installed a small charge of high explosives and control software.
But, that's just the internet buzz.

Hezbollah went to the pagers as cell phones and computers were being monitored. Also, if you are the ones supplying the pagers, you can put whatever you want in them. Software, hardware, or even a small charge of explosives, if you want. Is it an 'honorable" way to wage war? Perhaps, perhaps not, but Hezbollah launching rockets and missiles into civilian population from schools and hospitals to try and avoid retaliation isn't that "honorable" in my opinion.

I suspect an intelligence operation that worked quite well, probably never to be acknowledged publicly.

Stop using cell phones because the Israelis are monitoring and tracking, for now use only these new pagers to receive instructions. Let them become relatively comfortable with their new comms, then turn on the hurt.

Very effective, very well planned, very well executed.

Israeli does it again. One has to remember " those natives" use their right hand for most things and left hand for " cleaning" after a BM only. What hand do most use to hold a pager or cell? Some explosive similar, better than RDX or Simtex may have been used? I'll not comment any more as about to fall on floor laughing…..

Pagers were made by Gold Apollo, they take standard AAA batteries. There's pictures floating around of exploded ones.
