Holster recommendation for 686SSR?

Hello,

I have a Model 686 SSR (L-frame, 4" barrel, fiber optic front sight) for which I'm looking for an open carry holster (here in New Mexico open carry is legal without a Concealed Carry license). It would need to accommodate the 4" barrel and protect the fiber optic front sight, and be able to secure the revolver for hiking over rugged terrain. It is pretty dry here so moisture retention is not an issue.

Any suggestions?

Roberto

Try the Galco website. I shopped for awhile trying to find holsters for my 2 favorites, S & W 686+ 2 1/2"', and S & W 460XVR 8 inch, and found great retention holsters in leather on their site. Absolutely love the smell of real leather. Before you pull the trigger (pun) check Amazon for the same exact holster. Don't know how but prices, for the exact same holster, are cheaper on Amazon with less shipping fees even though they are shipped from Amazon.

Dave Workman, among others, is on this site/Forum. You can search his name. He's a great leather worker - his holsters are excellent and he can customize it I am sure.

Just received a DeSantis thumb break scabbard for mr 4" 686 fits nice carries nice.

I've had DeSantis thumb break scabbard for a 5" 1911, a 5" 627, and a 2.625" 627, all around $50. In two cases while the fit to gun was fine off the belt, when on a cinched belt, the holster opening pulls tight and makes getting in and out more difficult. Only the 5" 627 didn't have this problem. Galcos, while in the $80 to $110 range have thicker leather, a nicer finish, and the fit has the same retention on the cinched on the belt or off. I also have a Galco Cop II for my duty Glock if I'm carrying that out of uniform. I.e. you get what you pay for.

Below is a Galco Combat Master, no retention, and two Galco Thumb Break High Ride Silhouettes. I highly recommend Galco. But the high ride silhouette would not be a solution as it would not protect your front sight.

But there are a number of other Galco thumb break options such as the Fletch High Ride Holster which comes in numerous barrel lengths including the 686 4" Barrel for $109.95. It can be found cheaper on other web sites.

I am using a GALCO Dual Position Phoenix with a 686 SSR. It's well made and allows either a strong side carry or a cross draw when packing a rifle. I like that the holster's tension is adjustable and it also works with my Model 69.

S&W Fiber Optic Front Sight

If your concern is leather snagged on the front sight, I carry my 5" 686 in a Threeperson type holster and have never pulled leather out on the front sight with the revolver. The sight is slightly angled toward the muzzle that seems to resolve this issue. My older N frames with the straight post target sight often scrap leather from my holsters.
Oh yea, I would recommend the boys at the El Paso Saddlery to make what I want.

GALCO Wheelgunner holster is what I will carry my eventual SSR in.

I've liked that holster ever since I seen Sheriff Jim in an article with one.

No idea about your FO front sight, the SSR I want to get has a red ramp.
