I have a new to me S&W .45 Colt Mountain Gun and the way. They were a limited run from about 20 years ago.

Does anyone know of a quality holster that was made for them. or any of the cloth/canvas, etc. type holsters?

First...and understand this is just a personal thing...I would never carry a fine firearm in a canvas or cloth holster.

Second, there are so many fine and talented holster makers out there, it's really hard for me to recommend one. I steer clear of factory produced or off-the-rack holsters like Bianchi, Galco, de Santis, Safariland, etc. For a really nice Mountain Gun, anything worth doing is worth doing right. Plus, you might want a holster to show some individualism rather than have something just like everyone else has.

I use El Paso Saddlery, and am entirely satisfied with their products. I also have two holsters custom made by Danny Reed. Danny, by the way, does not have a real website and he does not do e-mail. If you want him to make you something, you either have to catch him at a gun show (mostly in North Carolina) or call him on the phone and talk to him personally.

Here's a photo of one of the holsters made by Danny Reed...one of the finest and best made holsters I've ever owned.

OK mr OP, a Mountain Gun will use the same holsters as "regular" 4in N frames, and there are a plethora available.

Are you looking for recomendation for carry (presumably in the woods/ field) ? As you can see from the responses above , many S&W aficianados feel that such a fine revolver should have beautiful leather to complement it. Or for more utilitarian use, the plainer examples from the usual suspects of quality leather will also serve.

Mr. Biggfoot44 and Mr. Watchdog, thank you both for your responses.

I should have figured that a 4" N Frame holster would work but it just didn't register. That's good info for a holster to carry in the field, hiking, camping, metal detecting and so on.

I also love the look of that holster made by Mr. Reed. Something on that order would be a really nice casual wear, presentation type holster.

I may try to contact Mr. Reed after I receive the Mountain Gun.

Thanks guys!

The Bianchi Cyclone is a cross draw holster design. The advantage to this is if you ride a horse or ATV the gun is accessible but out of the way. This one is old and was made for a 2 1/4" duty belt, not sure about the newer versions.

The Bianchi 5BH/L series is a fine general purpose holster and has been widely copied by other manufacturers.

OK , then for comfortable field wear, high enoughto wear in a vehicle, with only casual if any concealment required three broad catagories :

1. Such as Colby Bruce illistrated in above post.

2. Tom Threepersons style.

3. Pancake style.

The closest thing I have to a Threepersons style holster.

I forgot about this one.

You really want a holster specific to the 4" Model 27/28 because of the barrel contour. A regular 4" N-Frame holster will otherwise be fit for the heavy barrel contour and the gun will be loose in the holster.

Many people on this forum make holsters. Here's one I made for a forum member's 4" N Frame S&W. They can be fancy, plain, or anywhere in between. and as mentioned above. A fine gun like yours deserves real leather. Even if I'm not the guy making it.

You might also consider a shoulder holster like this Bianchi 2100. Triple K and Safariland made very similar models.

I have a couple tapered barrel N frames. Standard holsters work just fine. As they start out a little tight anyway they end up breaking in just the same. If a full lug gun is used in it first, that may be a problem.

For the 22-4 a Desantis thumb break scabbard.

For the "357" a KD holster.

The holsters suit the guns and their uses. Pick what you like and enjoy.

Both holsters were very affordable.

I would not use a cloth or canvas holster for anything but an air pistol or 22lr.
