home security systems??

Do any of you have home security cameras around your property, that work great. I've looked at wireless, wired, cheap and middle of the road. I've looked at game/trail cameras too. Some of them only work to 32f, some to 14f, and some lower. All different types of batteries and features. What do some of you suggest. Also how well does the nightvision work. I know if you want to spend several grand, there are good systems. What about if you want to spend $600-800? Just a pipe dream??? Thanks Mikey

With cameras the good stuff is can cost you. Pelco and Bausch both make great camera and DVR equipement. American Dynamics is good stuff too.

I highly doubt you'll get the quality you want for under a thousand.

+1. Your going to spend much more on a decent system.

Figure out what your trying to accomplish with the camera system. Will someone be viewing the system constantly? Or will you rely on the DVR? Or just to see who's at the front door?

I am not an expert mind you. I've helped install several systems. Here are my observations.

As a professional locksmith I have responded to homes and businesses that have been burgled to repair their locks. On many occasions I have had the opportinity to view surveillance system recordings.

I often see cameras that are not positioned correctly and sometimes they don't have enough cameras for a certain area. The biggest problem is recording quality, I have watched videos where the bad guy's face is completely visible but because of the poor quality, nobody could tell who it was. Also I have seen area's where infrared cameras should have been used.

Sorry for rambling. But IMHO, once you figure out what your trying to accomplish that may help you decide what type of system you need, how many cameras, and recording capacity. Get a good system even if you have to buy one piece at a time.

Buying a security or camera system is like buying a revolver . . . you can buy a cheap one, save a little money, and be unhappy with it the entire time you own it. Or, you can spend a little more up front, get what will do the job right, and you're done.

I have a 4 cam system that I got from a company called 123 security. Have been using it for a few years now with 0 problems. All are day/night cameras, two of the four are very clear in no light conditions, the other two not so great unless there is a small light source. The entire system was less then a grand. The DVR records any movement and you can even view them over the internet if you want.

Thanks for everyones input. I checked all the big box stores and most cameras are average to poor quality. I'm looking at a setup from a local security company; 4 cam setup, nice picture quality, for about 200 bucks more than the chain stores. I want to be able to see a persons face at 25 feet, so picture clarity is my goal. Again, thanks for everyones help. Mikey

I use ADT. It's a great system but it wasn't cheap.

covers the hole house inside and out, worth the money.

I have been happy with the system from FrontPointSecurity.com that includes a secure cellular link. No need to worry about phone or cable service going down. Sends me a text message whenever conditions of the system change. Also keeps a log that can be viewed on-line at there site. Changes can be made in real-time by logging in. Cameras can be monitored at any time...etc.. Very inexspensive quality smokes, motions, contacts, cameras, remotes and monitoring service.

Do not want to "bad-mouth" a security camera system, but just bare in mind that those things can come back to bite you in the butt sometimes. They also record ALL YOUR MOVES as well. Just something to keep in the back of your mind. I would expect that if you ever had the unfortunate situation of shooting a perp. the police would ask you to submit the DVD recording of the incident. These days anything you do could potentially be used against YOU! Just saying...........

Security Systems

Bear in mind that a pro can/will defeat most any system extant. Cameras are like just about anything else; you get what you pay for. Compare a Tasco scope to a Leopold just once and you'll see the difference. I have a secure cell link, motion detectors, motion lights, pressure pads, cameras and would install remote claymores if I could get away with it! Mostly bored kids and druggies who come from the inner city to hit the higher end neighborhoods for smash and grab for the next fix! Pics do help, if they are of quality. Bad pics just make you mad!
