How accurate was your M&P out of the box?

My 9c shot about 2" to the right @ 25'. My front sight became loose within a few weeks of my purchase, so I sent it in for repair to S&W. When it came back to me, it shot about 3" to the left @ 25'.

FYI: I had another shooter verify that my 9c was off by the amounts given, so I knew it was not me.

Just had night sights installed, so I paid the gunsmith to sight the gun. So I was curious if ya'll had your M&Ps sighted, or do you just shoot it as-is from the factory without any sight adjustments.

Same here, it was due to my lack of technique with striker-fired guns. Otherwise, it was as good as I let it be.

What you describe is a sight adjustment issue, not an accuracy issue. You would need to shoot some groups at 25 yards to gauge your accuracy. Also, most POI and accuracy issues are induced by the shooter, not the gun.

Both my full size M&P9 and my M&P9c were very accurate right out of the box. The more my skill and consistency improve the more impressed I am with the accuracy both are capable of. I am definitely the limiting factor (though less so the more I practice).

I changed the sights fairly quickly after purchasing. The gun is a competition gun used by my wife in IDPA. No other changes have been made.

No issues with my 4 M&P's out of the box. Even after removing and replacing sights by hand, I eyeballed and they still shot fine.

I marvel at accuracy questions from a 4" barrel. You all must be much better than I am. Here is a formula to figure how much a sight needs to be moved to change the point of impact:
M = S * D / (R * 12)

Where:
M = amount of movement or change in sight height needed (in inches)
D = distance in inches need to move the bullet's strike to hit point of aim
R = range to target in FEET
S = distance between the front edge of the rear sight and the rear edge of the front sight blade (in inches)

So if you are 3" off at 75 feet, with a distance of 5" between sights, 5*3 / 75*12 = 0.0166"

Basically you need to move the sight 17 thousands of an inch.

Are you asking about the gun's ability to shoot tight groups or if the sights were regulated so as to hit the center of the target?
In both of these cases all 4 of my M&P's shot to center and delivered very good groups as well. The .45 seems to group a little better than the 9 or .40 but they all deliver exceptionally well for me!

I think you are right. I used the wrong term.

My groups were consistently to the right with the first sight, and consistently to the left with the replacement sight. It was obvious from looking at the front sight that S&W did not even try to center it. Sure, I could adjust the rear if I wanted, but from what I read here, rear adjustment is very difficult. So I paid a guy.

I was referring to the center of the target.


I attached some pics... both @ 25'. Each target was shot with 10 rounds. Outer ring of each target is 8" in diameter.

M&P9C (with factory sighted - groups ~3" left of bulls eye). Beretta 9mm (I shot a bit high)

My full sized .40 had to been sent back in to Smith and Wesson b/c the front sight had "drifted" to the right. Can't wait to get it back!

Mine has been great and accurate out of the box. From a pistol rest it is not as accurate as my CZ's but accurate enough for IDPA.

Mine was accurate, although I shot low left. It is better now that I practiced trigger control with dry fire.

Mine shot low left, or so I thought. The more i practice, the better those sights seem to get. Almost every M&P that's come through our local range has been capable of 3" groups at 25 yards, most are better than 2.5".

Mine shot great straight out of the box. I've probably put 1,500 rounds through it total, never had any issues... Okay one issue, my first time taking it to the range, I had gone through two magazines (10 rounds each) inserted magazine # 3 and on that 21st shot the white dot on my front sight went flying. I was freaking out because my CCW class was a week away! Whiteout is a great replacement LOL.
In the past 6 months, I've ordered a supertuck deluxe for it, the apex tactical DCAEK kit (Love it!) and a set of trijicon night sights.
This is quite possibly one of the best guns I own, and I carry it with me everyday.

My fullsize M&P 9 hits dead on point of aim at 10-15 yds. with less than 2" five shot groups at that distance. I love the gun.
