How do you shave?

I've been shaving for the past few years (or however long it is since they came out) with a Gillette Fusion razor. I get an excellent shave with the razor, but the cost of the replacement cartridges is insanely high, IMO...so I'm looking for a lower cost alternative. I've already tried a DE safety razor, and that's just not for me. While I haven't tried one, I'm sure a straight edge ("cut throat") razor definitely wouldn't be. My wife gave me a Braun 790cc - 4 a couple of years ago; I get acceptable shaves with it, but I have to shave every day or I don't...and, I don't get quite as close as I do with a blade. Since I'm retired it's not mandatory that I shave every day, or get a close shave, but when I do shave I like the feel of a really close shave. I have a heavy beard, so I will have stubble by the next day after I shave, even with a close shave.

So, what if any recommendations do you have? (Other than to grow a beard.)

I'm retired too so I use a Braun if my beard is only 2-3 days long. If longer I go with my Norelco. If beard won't feed into either one, I use a cheap replacement double edge blade. Since that only happens once in a while, I refuse to pay the insane prices for high-end cartridges.

Since I switched to the disposable four blade razors from the two blade type, I've cut myself perhaps ONCE. Each one lasts at least a couple of weeks and I get a close shave.

I use the Mach-3 razor. I've found that if I wash and dry the blades after every shave a blade will last 4 -6 weeks. That works out to be $.80 a week, not to expensive.

As for shaving I do it every morning just as soon as I get out of the shower. I use shaving cream that has to be whipped into a lather and applied with a shaving brush. I give myself a complete and close shave then I lather up again and do it all over again. I get a great shave that way without having to worry about razor burn.

After shaving, I towel dry my face and finish off with Clubman brand shaving talc. When I use an aftershave I use a Bay Rum in the cooler weather and Royall Lyme in the warm weather.

I've worn a short full beard for over forty years--keep it trimmed. I'm retired and live alone, so I usually shave neck and caved-in cheeks every other day. My beard is now so white the stubble doesn't show much.

I use the Gillette Good News two-blade jobs without the slimy, nasty lube strip that makes me feel I'm trying to shave with a slug. Haven't bought shaving cream in probably forty years, preferring Ivory soap or the shampoo I use. Haven't tried any of the recent electric razors, but I was never too satisfied with two Norelcos and a Schick I owned years ago.

I use the Bic Metal. It's a single blade with a metal bar. Almost as good as a straight razor and very easy to trim and cut close edges on my sculptured beard.
As a test a friend of mine washed and dried a twin blade disposable razor after each shave and got a year out of one blade. I do similar, instead of putting it away wet, I make sure its rinsed and dried on the towel and I get about a month and a half out one Bic Metal.

I've read that after washing and drying, storing the razor in baby oil will keep it from rusting/corrosion. Supposedly, it isn't shaving that dulls the blades, but corrosion from being in a damp environment (bathroom - shower.) I'm going to give that a try.

I've never gotten a really good shave from a disposable razor, even of the same model...like a Fusion disposable. I don't know if it's my imagination or what, but of all the various ones I've tried, the disposables don't work very well for me.

I have an extensive collection of wet razors dating back to the old Schick injector and original Gillette Track II. I found the Gillette Sensor line a leap forward from those bloody days. The Gillette Mach 3 was a slight improvement over the Sensor. My current favorite is the Schick Hydro 3, because it gives me a very comfortable shave. In all honesty, I find that any modern razor gives me a close shave. Cost and comfort are what I hold important.

I started shaving at the young age of 13 at that time I was forced to use a safe razor at the age of 15 I got my first electric razor and I have shaved with an electric razor ever since.

I use a Gillette Trac II. Same one I've been using since 1981. Blades are hard to find now, and I have to get them on-line.
I rarely use an electric, and when I do, it's my late Grampa's one from the early '70s.
Then of course, I put on a lot of Aqua Velva. It "Smells like a man".

I like Old Spice...but it was what my wife's dad used (he passed away years ago) and it still makes her sad when she smells it, so I don't use it.

I noticed that CVS Pharmacy has a line of double edge replacement blades for the Trac II, which I think are made by Persona. I also saw some generic double edge blades at Family Dollar that were $2 for a pack of 10.

This was my favorite razor until I could no longer find them. Where do you get yours? I have not seen them in years and I'd go back to them in a heart beat - if I could find them.

Now I shave with a three blade Schick I purchase from Sam's. I like this one because there is enough space between blades to rinse out the gunk. Some of the other multiblade shavers I've used wind up clogged. At that point they don't work so hot.

OT, but inquiring minds want to know. In all old pictures and movies it shows native americans clean shaven. There are a lot of indians in my area and they do have beards that are scragley however outside of mustachs and some manchu type whiskers I have never seen one try to or could (?) grow a full beard. Whats up with that? If they never started shaving the first time they dont grow and if you do start it makes em grow?
How many of you have to shave the outside your nose? I do. I lost my nose and had it built up with grisle from between my ribs and ears and then had a scalplock taken from the top of my head put over it. I have been telling theresa I am going to quit shaving my nose but she wont go for that!
In fact she carrys a little battery pencil looking shaver and makes me stand inspection every few days and works me over with it, especialy when we go out.

Walgreen sold them up 'til recently and may still from time to time, but I can't find them there anymore. I found out Bic still makes them and you can buy them direct, like I did, from the factory, $1.99 for a five pack. I buy 10 packs at a time and shipping is about $4. Love them. http://www.bicworld.com/us/products/details/178/metal Hope that helps.

Since I am Retired I found it cheaper NOT to shave  ... I grew a beard! :D

I didn't wait to retire last time I shaved was in 1972 when I got out of the army. But I did use DE razors before I stopped. Hair cut last one 1990, saved a lot of money since then.

I do...I still have my original nose, but it has started sprouting a few hairs on it. Fortunately they aren't thick or really noticeable, but I can see them with my peripheral vision, so every few days I run a trimmer over my nose. I also have to shave my ears...they are getting so hairy that I have to mow them down every couple of days. Fortunately, I still have a full head of hair, but if I didn't I could do a comb over from ear to ear and braid it into a top knot.

You guys that never shave or get haircuts...do you look like the Duck Dynasty guys? :p

I always had to keep a clean shave and a haircut (management position in a very conservative company) for my working life. Since I've been retired I've grown my hair longer on occasion, but I get tired of messing with it, so I keep it cut...not buzzed or white sidewalls, but not real long. I also have tried a beard (used to wear one when I was in college) but since I have sleep apnea, and have to use a CPAP machine, I can't get a good seal with a mustache. I don't care for the look of a beard without a mustache, plus I just like the feel of a clean shave.

Gillette Mach 4. I thought it must be a Mach 3, because it has three blades, but nooo. I just checked. What's up with that, anyway?

My pops gave it to me as a Christmas present many years ago, along with a stock of blades and his favorite shaving cream. I use the blades for a long time, and use Barbasol if I am home (because it is cheap), or water or hand soap on the road. The main thing is to get it wet.

I tried an electric on a couple of occasions. I don't know how anybody can stand to run one of those things over his face. It's a form of self-abuse, and not the fun kind.

a few swipes with a Mach 3 under the showerhead. No cream. Works fine. And why do the disposables cost less than just the refills? Costs to be green, eh?
