Forget, for a second, this is the Smith and Wesson forum -- and let me commit heresy...

But, I've got to ask: How good -- really -- are Smith's M&P series?

I haven't shot any of them yet -- and I've been holding back on REALLY evaluating them...

What are strengths and weaknesses?

Objectively, how do they compare with other polymer framed pistols -- such as the Steyr, Springfield, Glock and others?

Can they take a substantial market share away from Glock?

Will they prove to be as "tough" as Glocks are supposed to be? (Remember where the Glock 19 was left in the ocean for a year -- frozen -- boiled alive -- eaten by sharks and excreted (

) -- amid other such abuse...

Smith and others have had a LONG time to bump off Glock...Will the M&P series change the balance of power (and I'm not really sure what the Glock market percentage is right now versus Smith...)

The only feedback I've heard has been on this forum -- and a Glock buddy who's "kinda" impressed -- but doesn't like the fact that some springs in the M&Ps aren't corrosion resistant...He thinks it's a design flaw...

Well, I can't see the future but I'm ok with hindsight and hindsight tells me the M&P 40C that I carry concealed works fine.

I am a crusty old codger who likes steel guns. The M&P is the only polymer gun I own.

My son is probably a better reflection of preferences in polymer guns. His first gun was a Glock 17. He has also had a SigPro, a Steyr and a Springfield XD. But his favorite gun is the M&P 40, followed by the M&P 45, followed by the M&P 9.

Is the M&P a Glock-killer? Maybe. It beats the Glock on ergonomics and is competitive on price. Only time will tell whether it has comparable reliability and durability, but that appears promising.

I have owned a springfield XD 45, a glock 9mm and 40, and a h&k usp 45. IMHO the m&p 45 is hands down the best I have ever owned. It is accurate, comfortable, and so far 100% reliable. Just my 2 cents, buy one you won't be sorry.

My M&P9 is issued, didn't choose it. That said, I am now looking to buy the compact for my off duty use. I am very impressed with the M&P. I think the Glock is great, very innovative when it arrived, but Smith has taken the concept way beyond everything else that's out there. Only time will tell if it will take away any of the market, or if it will hold up as well as Glock, but things look promising.

I have always hated polymer pistols and i had tried all of them. This all changed when I bought my M&P9.I now also own a M&P9c and a M&P45.Most people who have shot my M&P pistols prefer them over the Glock. All of my M&P pistols have several thousands of rounds through them and tey have been 100% reliable.A lot of police departments are already using the M&P pistols.Given time I think they will take away a magor part of Glock Law Enforcement sales.I will be buying more m&p pistols in the future.

I just got the 9mm Compact for Christmas, so I have not had the chance to put it thru its paces. I have been hearing and reading good things about the M&P line (enough to make me ask/bargin/beg my wife for one!

Not to simply 'ditto' the others, but I've owned Glock, H&K, Sig, Ruger, Springfield, Kel-tec, and Kimber polymer-framed pistols. Now, I only own two and they're both S&W M&Ps.

I really think S&W hit a home run and given any budget I need for this type of gun ($750 +/- $250 or so), I choose M&P.

Few officers bought M&P in .40 S&W. All I can say that they are ok, good. But they are not a G23 ( or 22, or 35). PS. I base my opinion on watching hundreds of officers shoot different pistols every year. I also base it on STOCK guns and FACTORY ammunition. I can't comment on how guns behave when it comes to "tricked guns" and "reloads".

I have both the full-size and compact versions in .40S&W. The both have been 100% reliable. Fit and finish is excellent. The 40c actually replaced my SIG P239-DAK as my small carry which I never thought anything would. The M&P's a winner.

I guess I would be a called a Glock Guy but I sold my G23 a couple months ago. When I got home from the show I began to look at all the ammo I had in 40 and decided I did a stupid thing selling the G23. I went back to the show the next day and purchased a M&P 40C.I then got 2 free mags for a total of 4 for it. I have now shot 400 rounds through this pistol and I LOVE IT! Not only with the 3 grip choices does it fit my hand better but....points better than the 23 but is every bit if not more accurate!
Wow I sure said a mouth full. JMHO.....Dont be afraid of getting one of these pistols. I think they are great and trust mine and my familys life on it cause I carry it daily.

I like my full-size .40 - feels great in the hand, nice trigger, seems well-made. One complaint: The mag release spring tension is a bit too light for my taste. The mag does not "auto-eject", however.

My new M&P9mm is about a month old came with a long draging tigger and I was sure it would need some help I all way's shoot a new gun and let it find it's own sweet spots and give it help were needed. After about 400rd's the trigger seem's to be self improving fast the trigger is starting to clean break and has nice feel I been doing this a long time and never had a gun do that so fast So far the gun has been flawless So far I shoot WWB LRN FP plated it eat's them all.Yes I like this gun a lot

I have a M&P9 and a G-23. I was thinking about trading the G-23 for an M&Pc in 9mm or .40. How does the recoil compare between the M&P40c and the G-23?

Thanks,

Don

I'm a die hard 1911 guy that's gone over to the dark side. The Polymer M&P.

No I won't be selling off any 1911s, and in fact just ordered a new one this month. But I bought a M&P45 in early November and was mightily impressed. Impressed enough to go out and buy a M&P9c the first of December, and I plan to add two more M&Ps in 2008. The things are accurate and reliable and just a joy to shoot.

My Beretta PX4 9mm was my favorite gun until i purchased my M&P 40 about 3 weeks ago. Fit and finish is awesome and it's very accurate out to 25 yards, plus with the rebate and free mags deal going on right now you can't lose.

Being a die hard Glock fan (regarding plastic pistols), I would say that the M&P series is so good that I am ready to sell of my remaining Glock's and replace them with M&P's. The only thing I don't like about the M&P series is it does not have the Glock trigger reset, however it does retain the smooth Smith and Wesson DAO trigger.

Sargespd:

Is the department you're with the Springdale PD? I know Cincinnati PD went with M&P, but hadn't heard that Springdale did, too. Cool!

I have not owned any glocks. But I have shot a Glock 17 a lot. When I was looking for a new handgun last year I figured that I would end up with a glock but after the great grip feel and the way the M&P shot, I ened up with a full size M&P .40. I have shot about 600 round through it with just a couple failure to feeds and those were within the first 50 rounds.

I plan on adding a few more M&P in the coming year. I know of 4 other people that shoot with M&Ps and all of them have had no problems, and one considers about any other gun that is not a Glock a piece of junk.
