Well here goes my first post.
Back in ’81 I bought one of the first 586’s to hit the shores of the UK. It was my second pistol purchase, and I absolutely LOVED shooting that gun. I was a mere lad of 19 back then.
In 1997 when the government of the time went on what can only be described as a Witch hunt, and banned the private ownership of pistols, I was devastated. I gave my 586 her last good clean, then handed her over to the Cops, along with all my other pistols, all to be destroyed (or sold on by the government… we never did find out really!) She was nearly in the same condition as when I bought her new, some sixteen years earlier. I'd say 99% MINT. Man I wept, I kid you not. My guns "legally" stolen, my pastime bannished.

Many years later, I moved away from the UK as I had finally had enough of the BS. The country is ruined, and ordinary hard working folk are the ones who are paying the price. Anyway, I moved to New Zealand so that I could once again have the freedom to shoot for fun, and also for a better life in general.

If there’s one thing missing, its my 586. I have looked around for a while, and cannot find a 4” 586 in anything like the same condition that mine was. There are a few 6” ones that come available from time to time, but that’s all. I have (and still am) considering the new version, but nostalgia is a powerful emotion, and the fact is, I want to replace my ’81 with as near as possible the same.

I’m now looking further afield, and which all brings me to writing this. The cost of exporting a pistol from the US to NZ will be around $500 (yes OUCH!)… but we are not here forever, and my eyesight isn’t improving.

Bottom line, if anyone has, or knows of a near mint, with box etc (if poss) early 586 4”, I would love to hear from you. I could arrange all the paperwork, basically it would be handled by a US exporter (with all the relevant docs)….. Yes, it’s a long shot, but I’m not getting any younger!

Thank all... love the forum.

Sorry Mate, if I find a 4" 586 it will be mine.
Welcome to the forum and good luck with your search. :)

I hope this project works. We have some dealers on the board and they may have one. We also have another New Zealand member, although he seldom posts.

Tony Blair was a good ally in Iraq and in Afghanistan. He worked well with our President Bush. But domestically, he was quite "left" and really stepped on your rights.

I hope you like your new country. I gather that gun laws there are at least better than in Australia. Even the Aussies have it better than in the UK!

Did you consider the USA as a new home? We have one former Brit on the board, who lives in Las Vegas. Maybe you fellows can reflect on your improved lives post UK.

I have a buddy, retired cop, who wanted to sell me his 586 a year or so ago. Then he changed his mind. It was his first duty gun, and he decided he really wanted to keep it.

The other day I got to shoot it, though, and I sure get why you want one.

Thank you for sharing your story with us. I dearly hope our gun privileges are never abused like yours were in the United Kingdom.
I sincerely wish you the best in your quest to replace your beloved 586. You've picked a great forum to search for your lost love!

Hahaha... fair enough Ron. You guys out there shouldn't have a problem finding them I'm sure.:)

Yes we did consider the USA, nearly bought a holiday home in FL just before 911, then it all went pear shape.

Tony Blair was pandering to the people. I'm afraid public opinion was against "us" (anyone who had a gun), and there was a chance for Blair to get a few brownie points for banning pistol ownership. Or as he said "taking the guns off the streets and out of the hands of criminals"... what a joke. It had no effect on gun crime, as the "criminals" didnt seem to want to hand over their guns! Wow, what a surprise!

Yup. Well for me its a nostalgia thing too. Also, I just loved the gun. Learned a lot with that.

I too hope that you dont suffer the injustices that we did. I'm sure you guys would be better placed to fight it than we were. We were so few, and such a small voice. Thats all it comes down to in the end. VOTES and MONEY.

And thanks for the sentiment.

Welcome.

I certainly can appreciate your quest - but in the meantime don't be scared to try one of the new 586 models. No, it won't be the same as your old '81, but I promise you its no slouch. And it would give you a sweet shooter in the meantime.

I mean why put off til tomorrow what you can shoot today!? :)

I can't sell it to you, my daughter "owns" it. 1988 mfg 586-1 4" - her birth year revolver.

I had a 6" no dash back around the time you bought yours but I foolishly sold it off to a friend.

I agree, you should own one of these and I hope some kind soul on this site finds one for you.

Cheers from San Francisco where the bumbletards are trying to disarm us as well.

It's not so easy here, we just dont have that many pistols available. Even our biggest gun shop doesnt have new pistols in stock, and getting them to order one, well its like asking for Unicorn poo. It's almost imposible so i'm told. So, it will be just as easy for me to get one myself, and if I do, it will have to be something good, else the ridiculous cost of export/import wont make it worthwhile.
We are at the arse-end of the world when it comes to "getting stuff".

Oh my friend how you taunt me!!! Pictures as well....!

I'm sure one will come along somehow. I'll just have to be patient.

As I said, I am hanging out for a MINT one..... I've waited 17 years, so I can wait for a "real lady" to come along I'm sure.:) And yes, if some kind soul did gift me the chance to own one, I would treasure it believe me.

That's a sad, sad story...one that was repeated to our north and really scares the...well, you understand. I find it unimaginable that a government can just take stuff away like that...must have been a most angering, frustrating thing that, while I pray it doesn't happen to us, fear it will at some point...I just hope not in my lifetime.

Your post should remind us all here in the U.S. that these things we call "rights" are at the discretion of "elected" officials and, even though we like to think otherwise, can be taken away.

Many of us on this forum (myself included) have the very gun you seek and if we don't can get one without too much trouble. If I had two I would sell one to you! The auction sites regularly have nice examples and while we like to complain about prices ...they are available. Perhaps you can find a seller, on Gun Broker or such, who will ship overseas...best of luck to you and keep us posted!:)

Yes, all food for thought my friend.

Oh, I do look on Gun Broker, and yes, as soon as I do get one, I will post pictures galore!!!!:) oh, and appreciate your kind thought too.

Such a sad story. even though it is not for sale as mom gave it to me shortly after dad passed, i have a 4" 586(no dash) with box and paperwork. if it has a full box shot through it, i'd be surprised. i have the original box and paperwork for it including the sales receipt showing it being purchased in October of 1983. i was 10 when dad bought it and always wanted to shoot it, but we never did until after our home was destroyed in a tornado in may of 1985. we shot it little that summer and then it disappeared into the new gun cabinet in our new home. i had not seen it until mom gave it to me in 2011. it's my most cherished gun.

Such a sad story !

If the 6" versions are readily available have you considered purchasing a 4" barrel and swapping it onto the 6" gun ?
Barrels do go up for sale here usually between $100 and $150.

BTW in the USA except the guns frame there is no regulation on gun "Parts" like the barrel as they are considered just like a spring or a screw.

I bought a new 586 back in 1983 but traded it for a Model 59,
A replacement has since been aquired in SS nickel and blue ...great guns.

BTW the dash 2 and above have the hammer nose bushing bug worked out.

Thanks for that.
Yes the barrels are available in the USA but there is the problem. Just to get barrel out will cost me about $500.

It needs an export licence (although I know some items are just posted by individuals privately) which will be costly, then the cost of the barrel, then the freight, then OUR import duty etc.... Im only guessing around $400-500
So even for someone who yearns for a 4" 586, it still stings a bit too much i'm afraid. But thank you anyway.
On saying that, if i could get one sent out at a reasonable rate, it would be the way to go im sure.;)

Speedyquad…. Promise me right now that you will never ever let that gun go! Hear me now, my ancestors had great magical powers, and I hereby lay my promise that if you do so much as think about selling it, you will be visited by a plague of rabid armpit dwelling fleas… Seriously, do not let that one go. And I’m sorry that it comes with such a sad tale of loss.

Welcome from AZ Saxguy! I'll taunt you just a bit more with one that isn't for sale...Here is my 586-1:

and hanging out with its brother the 581:

Good luck on your quest and welcome to the forum!
