How Many MPH Over the Speed Limit?

On I-95 here in Florida most folks run about 80 MPH it seems, some slower and some faster.

Paced a Ferrari on I-75 once when going to Pensacola. He was doing 100 MPH. Will see if I can find the picture of the speedometer that my Wife took to send to her Brother, while she was fussing for me to slow down.

A few miles over, 68 in a 65, 57 in a 55.

I've noticed something. When I go by those radar sign showing your speed I'm usually a little slower on the radar gun than my speedometer. The sigm will say 54, my speedometer will say 57. Who knows?

Last speeding ticket was in August 1989, in my Mom's car which I wasn't used to driving. 71 in a 55.

None since then.

If you don't put on the correct size tire when the originals wear out, the the overall radius can reduce or increase your speed by 3-7 mph.

One reason the fuzz gives you 5 mph.......
but the CHP did +5-9 mph .. will stop might site
and +10 mph, will stop, will site ..... as a general rule.

Conditions and driving style are taken into writing the citation.

The speed limit is a good thing but I will get into the "Fast flow" if everyone is doing it, but bailout at 14+ mph, in 5pm traffic.

My doctor told me on a straight stretch he cruises at 140. He has been stopped but no tickets. That is no strain on a 600hp + car that is rated at 200mph +.

Many vehicles are manufactured with speedometers reading high. My Prius is about 7% high. No way to adjust it, even though it is an all electronic system. I did some digging, and the spec for speedometers is up to 10% fast, but something like 2% slow. I have the stock rims and stock tire size. Next tire change I will jump up 2 tire sizes diameter wise. Should get me about .7" more ground clearance too.

I measured the speed with three different phones and GPS apps running. All were within 1 mph of each other. Car was about 7% high. At "70 mph" I'm really doing 66. At "80" I'm doing about 75.

Yes, I drive a Prius. I also own 3 classic cars, 2 of which are real muscle cars. It kind of balances out.

The speed limit on most of our interstate highways is 80 with 75 on a few. So I generally do 85 or 80. Speed limit on most two lane state highways is 70 so I generally do 75. My wife is a little more lead-footed than that. We usually have a long way to go to get anywhere at all here and there's no traffic to get in the way most of the time. I don't know anybody who actually drives the speed limit on open highways here.

I stay in the fast lane because I am passing people. If Speedy Gonzales comes into my rearview, and starts growing bigger, I scooch over and let him and whoever is riding his tail go by. They'll get stopped before me.

I've got millions of miles under my belt, and keep my head on a swivel. If everyone is crowded together, I flow with the traffic and move out when I'm able. I'm a courteous driver and let folks have their space. I haven't had an accident since I was a teenager, when I was reckless.

On the interstate I generally run 82 or so in an 80 mph zone. E of me for 30 miles they illegally dropped the speed limit to 65 on an interstate designed for 75 mph traffic with 1960 cars. The cheapest new cars in the last 5 years have so much better suspension it isn't comparable. The city in the middle doesn't meet the federal standard of 50,000 people to allow a speed drop. State DOT did it anyway.
In that zone on the mountain pass I am usually going 75-80. I drop to 65 through the "city" but don't like it. State paved the highway closest to me in 2019. They straightened it, widened it and eliminated most of the passing zones, then dropped the night speed limit 5 mph lower than it was. They call it "improvements". I can't write what I call it.
I don't speed in town or near houses that might have kids around. I pass cars on Montana's interstates that are doing 55 and let rigs of all sizes pass me ding who knows what.

My rule has always been: "Don't drive any faster than you can afford to go!" Until I retired, in about 45 years of driving professionally, I received 2 speeding tickets. one was just being stupid and one was because I was not paying attention. Both cost me money I didn't have. Now, money isn't really an issue but it doesn't make good sense , to me, to give what I have to the state.. So I drive where I am comfortable, usually at or below the posted limit.

I got pulled over by a Texas Highway patrolman last Saturday. My brother and I just left the deer camp and I was driving up the farm road and we noticed the cruiser about a mile away. I didn't think nothing of it and he hit his lights as soon I drove by.
Here is how a traffic stop is SUPPOSED to happen. I find a good spot on shoulder of road. Both my brother and I have our hands up on dashboard/steering wheel and drivers window is down.
Trooper comes up and says politely says he pulled me over for speeding.
He states I was going 66 in a 60 mph zone. He asks if there is any guns in the car.
I say, "Why yes officer, one is on my belt, the other is underneath the driver seat, how would you like me to proceed" ??
He asked for license and I gave him my concealed permit, proof of insurance, after asking if my brother could open the glove box.
Gentleman was polite, gave me a warning ticket and we were on the way.

As I pulled out, I told my brother I was glad he told me what the speed limit was, instead of asking me what I thought it was, I would of said
"As fast as this dang truck can go"!!

Vast majority of my USA driving is on eastern interstates, on cruise-control, generally at 3mph over posted.
My most recent run on freshly paved sections of German Autobahn with a new rental SUV, I was comfortable at 175kph/110mph.

Been using Waze app for navigation, and it shows most radar enforcement locations.

The average speed of the bulk of the traffic at any given time has an influence on my speed; sometimes that's below the limit, other times it's above. But the posted limit is my "target" speed, and I try not to exceed it by more than 10% in any situation.

Eric300, Back in the day that might have been true (it was for me). But today with the need to prove that officers are really working and with special traffic enforcement programs ( officers pay based on performance) even 5 over may get you a ticket in some areas.

I wanted to mention that my ticket was for going 66 in a 60 mph speed zone. Nothing out there except ranches and a lot of deer!
I also was smart enough not to ask why I didn't get the 10 percent discount 9(70 in a 60).
My brother says my mouth overloads my something sometimes :)

Most cars right off the showroom has the speedometer set +3 MPH faster than what your actually driving. Last 3 I had were exactly 3 over according to GPS.

I went up a size on my truck tires when I first bought it, and it now registers +2 MPH faster.

So most of y'all driving 5 over are probably actually only doing 2 over the speed limit.

Here in FL on I-95 and I-4 the normal speed is 80 MPH. When traveling I'll get in the left lane and go with the flow up to around 95 MPH. Even then I've had to move over to let people going faster pass.

One time on my way to Cinti I had been stuck in a traffic jam on 75 in GA. for a while. When the roads cleared up I thought I'd make up for lost time. Happened to look up on a overpass and saw a state trooper sitting there. Looked down and I was doing 90. My heart dropped, slowed down and moved over to the right lane as I watched him coming down the onramp with the blues flashing. He got the person behind me. I was too happy.
