For me it depends on the capacity or my carry and mags. I always carry two extra when carrying 1911, or my Kahrs. If carrying any of my M&Ps usually just one extra mag, either 13 or 15 rounds. I seldom carry a revolver any more but at least two reloads when I do.

Pretty easy to run thru plastic pellets in a gym when your life and property and finances aren’t really on the line. Kinda like Call of Duty . . .

You ever done it? Or are you just speculatin'?

I carry one in the pistol and one spare when I carry my SD 40, and one in the the pistol and two spares with my 1911.

Greetings!

In light of the current state of civil stability, for those of you that carry a semi-auto, how many magazines do you typically carry?

Thanks for participating in this survey. While I live in a state that mandates neutered magazines (10 rounds max), I am looking to get a feel for what my fellow forum members feel comfortable with.

Thanks in advance for your opinions!
I'll confess that I'm a "no spares" guy because I pocket carry and it's already a pain in the butt to carry my keys and change on my weak side.

But I am old, long-retired, currently living in a very safe area and I almost never go into any genuinely risky situations. In the "good old days" when I did, I often carried a New York reload.

I do not recommend anyone do as I do. It is minimal at best, but appropriate for my current situation.

Been CCing since I got my permit six years ago. Now I never leave home without my CC and a reload.
After a while, I bought my unarmed hubby a CC permit class and a 9mm Shield identical to my carry. He took the class, and then EDCed the Shield with a reload.
When I switched my EDC to a CZ PCR, so did he, and both of us still carry a reload.
Since we're retired and mostly go out in public together, armed identically, I not only have a spare magazine, but also a "Wingman" with a spare magazine. That's 58 rounds till empty.
We live in a relatively safe suburban area, but we'd stick with this EDC setup wherever we go because we are very comfortable with it.

That's interesting and seems really atypical. How did you end up becoming the family gun guy?

Nobody but the LEO in the family owned guns. We were always based in NYC - Long Island, but took many trips and temporary assignments out of state and country, so firearms ownership wasn't even considered until we retired to SC.
We dropped in on my childhood friend at Offutt AFB in Omaha, and her AF Colonel husband asked me if I was interested in firearms. I was affirmative, and he gave us a crash course then took us shooting the first time. It was a skeet course, and I loved it. Hubby didn't do as well as I did, and didn't much care for it.
But I was hooked. When we got home I signed up for Intro to Handguns, and then a CC permit course. Then after a while, I surprised hubby with a CC Permit course as a gift.

First ever trigger pull on an Omaha skeet course (a hit), with my friends hubby instructing.

In my quiet "Burb of the Burgh" it was my 3913 (7 rd., uncommon flush fit mag+1) and a spare mag (16rds ).........for 2 decades..... today I've switched to M Sparks double mag pouch worn between jeans and my belt. Total 24rounds.

With today's "weirdness" ..... I've switched to my Beretta 92 Compact at 15+1 and a spare 18rd mag ( all mags are mec-gar) if I'm leaving my Burb. Second 18rd mag in the center console of the truck. Extra ammo in my kit bag.

Rule 1. avoid trouble ! .......................

When I worked uniform. I'd carry a minimum of two spare mags if it was something like a G22 or G17. When we went over to the G37 in .45 GAP, I carried three. Always had a BUG on me too. Either a J-Frame or a subcompact GLOCK of the same caliber as the main duty gun.

Off duty, I carry guns like my wife wears shoes and purses. It switches throughout the day depending on my mood. :p But I always carry a spare mag or speed loader. Hell, sometimes I still carry a BUG and a main CCW piece when off duty.

When I left uniform work and became a gumshoe. I carried one spare mag on me regularly but had my Tac-Vest set up with two additional spares. And of course, always had a BUG on me.

Glad you made it out ok. I'd be interested in hearing more about this if you don't mind sharing. Was your reload of 6 in loops/pouch, or a loader? Did you carry a literal box of 50 on you, or in the car? Or was it a box worth in loops?

I was a plain clothes detective so my Colt DS was reloaded w/the one spare speedloader in my sportcoat pocket. The box of 50 was carried in my briefcase, along w/casejackets and various PD report forms, after the gunfight. Let me know in a PM if you want anything else, I’ll be glad to steer you to a magazine article from 2016.

Two moonclips... 9mm J-frame (five rounds each). I have a third in a pocket carrier (same as the other two) if I’m going somewhere where I’d want an extra, and a spare in the truck.

If that can’t get it done, I have an AR pistol with 140 rounds between what’s in it and my vest, inside my truck. If it is that bad, the J-frame should get me back to the truck.

Ballistically, isn’t an AR pistol in .223 about like a .22 magnum with a little heavier bullet with about 5 times the muzzle blast?

And to add... about 50% more bullet weight if you go in the 73-77 grain range.

One spare mag anywhere there is cash, two if Walmart owns the business or parking lot. Type “shooting and Walmart”, it’s all about statistics.
