How many Shields are there?

S&W had sold 1 million Shields by 2015. That was 5 years ago.

I'd been told more than a year ago that Shield sales had probably already blown by the 2 million mark.

As of this year it's more than 3 million.

Our Shield family products has become a consumer favorite, and by the end of fiscal 2019 we had shipped over 3 million Shield pistols.

3 Million made is an amazing number over such a short period.

It really shows where todays gun market has gone, in both emphasis and design. Its a plastic CC world out there.

Consider the Winchester model 94 lever actions have been around 125 years, are considered one the most iconic and popular firearms in history, and yet have a total estimated sales of 7 million, all models and variations, calibers.

FWIW, while the Shield is the hottest selling S&W pistol, back in 2016 we were told in a Glock armorer class that the G43 had become the best selling Glock in the first year following its release.

Then, last year Glock announced it had sold 1 million G43's in the first 3 years of its production.

GLOCK Reaches a Historic Milestone with the Millionth G43 & is Giving it Away

Now, it remains to be seen whether Glock can sell a total of 3 million G43's by the time they've been on the market for 7 years (as S&W has done with the Shield line). However, they might realize a bump in sales with their longer gripped G43X/48 models, as that overcomes some of the consumer objections that have been expressed regarding magazine capacity and grip length of the original G43 model line.

The Shield pretty much set the standard by which subsequent plastic single stacks will be measured (apologies to any Kahr P9/PM9 owners in the thread :p ).

S&W has also performed a trick not yet duplicated by Glock, for reasons they haven't yet seemingly cared to clarify, and produced the Shield in a .40, and then a marginally larger .45.

Some interesting custom variations have been produced in the S&W PC, too.

One can’t compare a product line with 3 calibers and now two snout lengths to one model of Glock. Compare the G42, 43, and X for a fair comparison. And I say that as a Glock-free person.
