A friend of mine has a 629-1 with a 3" barrel, someones combat grips, in nice condition he is going to sell. What is a fair price?

Thanks!

The 3 inch barrel commands a premium these days. I'm guessing no box, no docs, and stocks have been swapped? I would say that would bring it down to the $1000-$1200 range.

I sold one really really nice, with Smith combats, without box for 2100.00 a couple of years ago.
stansdds post above me is a decent range for what you described- without pics hard to say. Only "fair" condition would bring over 1000 in my opinion. But stainless is forgiving so any blems can mostly be polished out.
You need pics.

But Flitz on stainless can bring a "nice condition" to near 100% pretty easily if all else is well.

Pictures always help on this forum, and a 4 inch is still a desirable gun to a lot of guys but you’re probably just dropped down to $850 to $1000 depending on who’s combat grips.

Update, the barrel is 4", not 3".

Is it a square or round butt?

I picked this 629-1 round butt up a couple of years ago... One of these days I'll get around to lettering it, as I've never seen another factory RB 4" 629-1. I'm wondering if it might have been a 3" that got rebarreled?

Pictures certainly help but since it isn’t your gun we can understand the lack of them. Based on your subjective description a 4” 629 in “ nice” condition should fetch between $850-$1000

I see them for $1200. I see them sell around $1000.

I would suggest you have that lettered because a round butt 4” is pretty unusual. It kind of looks like a mountain gun,
I would remove the grip and make sure the frame has not been altered. If you have not already done so.
Either way it’s a very cool gun.

Very much appreciated.

I would like to have it and I would like to see my friend get a fair price for it and I like getting a bargin. LOL

I recently got a 629 ND 6" which is the configuration I like best. It is in VERY good condition.

My interest in the 4" is that it carries better and left handed holsters are available. Holsters for 6" N's seem to be a bit difficult to find and when you throw in the LH requirement, seem to disappear.

Thanks.

Frame appears factory, and the combats are S&W. IIRC, the first Mountain Revolvers were 629-2, and this has the heavy barrel, not the tapered barrel.

The serial number puts it ~1987, and within the range of the original Lew Horton 3" guns, which is why I think it may be a re-barreled 3". I guess I should just letter it...

This ^^^^^^^^

I have a couple LH 3”, one is a complete package. I haven’t looked at em in years. Guess it’s time to show em some love. I also have a -2 Mountain Revolver with box and goodies.
