how rare is a 17-2 with a 4" barrel?

I thought 17's had 6" barrels and the 18's had a 4" barrel. However, I have seen a factory 17 with a 4" barrel. Since it is a K frame, on the assembly line, they just put the next available barrel and cylinder in it and call it a 17?

Well you're in luck. Here's my 17-6 4" with partial under lug. They were only made for about 6 months and are more scarce than the 18's.

The difference in the 17-6 4" and the 18 is the barrel profile. The 18 is tapered and the 17 isn't.

Is the first question about a model 17-2 (pinned barrel)? If so, a 4" barrel of any kind was not standard, but the factory may have been willing to alter a 6" for a price. There were factory 4" 17-6s, early ones with the standard heavy wide ribbed barrel and later ones with the full underlug.

If in nice condition, I'd be tempted to letter that and see how rare it is. Maybe send a couple of pics.

In a previous thread I posted my 17-6 4" with partial under lug and said they were made for about 6 months with the partial under lug.

I've seen several 18's in person and not seen another 17-6 in person but a couple of members here have posted theirs.
