There are programmable TPMS sensors that can be installed on spare rims and the signals matched to the OEM sensors. Once programmed, no further issues until the batteries die.
The tire pressure sensors are an example of old tech that stays in place so the auto makers can gouge you for new parts/service. VW and others use the ABS/Traction Control sensors that count wheel revolutions to figure out if you have a low tire. Just needs a few extra lines of code in the computers that control our vehicles. Much superior method in my way of thinking.
