I wandered into a local store today just to look around, not expecting to find anything. The store is a rather large retailer, sometimes they have good deals sometimes not. When I looked in the used gun case I see an old Model-64 with a standard profile (aka pencil/tapered) 4 inch barrel. The sales lady doesn't know much about it or it's history when I ask to see it.

It appears to have lead a life in law enforcement, lots of holster wear, grips are beat up, lots of scratches around the grips on the back strap and side plate where it would protrude from a holster, dirty etc. However, the function is nice and tight, heavy trigger pull yet smooth. It has that carried a lot, but fired little feel to it. Price tag is $349, no box or accessories. Sales girl asks me if I'd be interested in it if the price was a little better and asks the manager. Price is now $299.

So it followed me home. After I cleaned it up, is still has some scratches, the grips serial to the gun, D584XXX. I found some pitting under the grips and the side plate has been removed at some point based on looking at the screws. It might have been polished at some point, but I also added some elbow grease to rub out some of the smaller scratches. Now I'd like to restore the finish back to the original brushed satin finish.

How'd I do?

That was a great deal. I would've snapped that up in a heartbeat! Scotchbright pads are your friend. Don't forget the after pics! ;)

There's a lot about human nature I don't understand, and one is; why do people make a purchase then ask for advice about the price:confused:

The time to have an idea of pricing guidelines is before you make the investment.

Sweet early Model 64 !
The tapered barrel 64 and Model 66 were S&W's first SS K frames and early examples of both are unique and desirable IMO.

LOL, I couldn't agree more. Ever notice how most of the threads I've started ask about the price of one I'm "thinking" about? :D You guys are a great resource that way.

I think this is one of them thar rhetorical questions - where the feller askin' the question already knows the answer he's gonna git ;)

And yeah, at 3 bills, I'd have had a hard time leaving that one at the store too! Even though I already have plenty in that caliber.

That's just the gun I'm looking for, a 64, 4 inch shooter with original stocks under $300. Damn, you beat me to it. Congrats to you.

You would be correct sir. :)

I figure any stainless gun in good working order under $300 is worth it. It can always be buffed/polished/or media blasted back into a decent looking weapon.

The pencil barrel 64s are not easy to come by. If you see one, and want it, grab it. My NIB 64 cost me $550 a few years ago. It was a grail gun I had wanted for years. It carries a little more easily than the bull barrel models. I removed the grips and replaced them with a beat-up pair of Magnas. Not for sale.

Good catch!

I've wanted one of those for a long time. I have several 64's w/ the heavy bbl. But, there is something elegant about the way your gun looks!

I picked up a 64-3 heavy barrel in a trade. Instantly shot it well. Never had a standard tapered barrel in 4". Enjoy your great deal! Bob
