HP 38 for .357?

I've been using W 231 (HP-38) since the late 1980's. Meters great!

I've been using it a lot lately in my .38 spls. But loaded and chronoed some .357 mags this past weekend.

I normally use Hoosier's HiTek coated 158 gr bullets for my .38 spl's with 3.8 grs W231.They give me around 750 fps and are more accurate than I am.

I used 5.8 W231 with the above Hoosier bullets and some plated RMR 158 gr. Both shoot great and chronoed barely over 1000 fps in my Model 66.
I like 1000 fps or slightly less (950 or so) for 158's in my Smith's. Very comfortable round to shoot and as I'm pushing 70 comfort is a "good thing". :)

I shoot a lot of W231/HP38 (same powder in a different can) in 38 Short Colt, 38 Special, and 45 Auto. I don't care for it in 357 Mag. The fast powder has a sharper recoil impulse than a slower powder like 4227, Hogdon or IMR. The slower powder gives more of a shove, so it's a more comfortable recoil.
