Hugh Hefner.R.I.P.

R.I.P. Mr. Hefner thank you for your service during WWII and thank you for making Millions and Millions of men happy with your fantastic Playboy magazine.

I only read the articles........
You jest but back in the day there were some GREAT writers that were published in Playboy. Hunter Thompson, Gore Vidal, Kurt Vonegut to name a few. Not to mention some great cartoonists Gahan Wilson to name one!
Much like Smith & Wesson revolvers there were stages on Playboy for the serious connoisseur. You had the Staple period, you had the post staple period, and very briefly the "non nekkid" period. The staple period van be compared to the pre 1980 period Smiths while the post staple period can be compared to the post 1980 period. I myself preferred the staple period. The brief ill advised non nekkid period can best be described as the "Lock period" which (unlike S&W) thankfully was short-lived.
And much like S&W,Playboy had competitors. Much like the comparatively unrefined and Brute "in your face" strength of Rugers, Playboy had to compete with Penthouse and Hustler. All were good in their own ways buy Playboy, like Smith & Wesson presented a more refined aspect to the same basic concept.

:D

How's THAT for some purdy wordsmithing!

I managed to purchase the second issue of PB at my neighborhood drug store when I was a teen. They kept them under the counter.

One of our local Fire Department captains once was a playmate of the month. She said she got a million dollars for the photo shoot (she was a TV journalist at the time), and did not regret it a bit. Still looks good, and she is sharp as a tack.

So long, Hef. You had a good ride, and were the envy of many.

John

He seems to have been a much savvier businessman than the other purveyors of skin magazines, and established his brand, so to speak.

A true American business icon. Took something half the population was carrying around for free and sold it to the other half while building a personal ***** empire. Hats off to him. Joe

You can't deny that Hef and his magazine were a huge influence on young men from the 1950s to at least the 80s. Including me! ;)
Playboy had a touch of class that no other men's magazine could ever have.
And yes, the articles, short stories and cartoons were excellent. But to be honest, it was the ladies that made Hef rich.

RIP Hef, you enriched many of our lives.
