Since my carry weapon 99.5% of the time is a 6906 w/12 rds of Federal 135 gr HP's, I would probably have it with me when the hits the fan. I never feel undergunned and if I need more than a dozen, I probably stepped in a bigger pile than I can prepare for. Joe

I know it was a silly exercise, but I got some interesting information and a few chuckles out of it.
At the end of the day, you and I shouldn't be carrying a weapon we are not willing to bet our life or anothers life on. And I agree, if I know going out the door I will be in a gunfight, I will not open the door....

M&P40. No sense having my best 1911 lying around in an evidence locker, with some clerk electric pencil-ing his ID marks all over it. 
Since it has to be one I own and I'm limited to it's one load capacity it would have to be my Sigma. It's never jammed so far and if 17 rounds aren't enough then I'm likely too out numbered for it to matter.

The only time I'd willingly take a handgun to a gunfight is because I had no time to grab a long gun. As a result, my answer is, "whichever handgun is closest." More often than not this would mean the little Black Widow in my pocket.

Not to derail the thread, but those rounds are not actually going to crack an engine block. That myth about the .357 probably dates back to Dick Tracy. An expanding bullet would actually work better if you're using that gun for personal defense against humans, unless you've urgent need to shoot through barriers and intermediate cover.

And on a seperate note, and I do hate being that guy, but it's been on here a lot lately. Clips go into your M1 Garand or feed your Mauser. Magazines feed your pistol. Unless someone has Han Solo's C96, their ammunition supply won't be in clips.

If you guys want to get technical about it... Some Mauser C96 style pistols were clip fed using stripper clips to top up an internal magazine. Others were designed to use detachable box magazines. To bring it back on topic... a variant of the latter in 9mm that was selective fire saw some use in the early days of WW2. Back when the Waffen SS was at the low end of the supply chain, they seemed to end up with a bunch and issued them to couriers and such.
Since they could be fitted with a shoulder stock, they were more useful than many machine pistols since the selective fire feature could be better controlled.
Where this is relevant, aside from the fact that unlike Glock 33s there are a few of these Mausers that are fully transferable, is that the exact question here has been posed before and attempts to answer it made by the worlds armies.
Eventually the answer to the question begat a variety of personal defense weapons - the grand daddy of which was the M1 carbine, the more modern examples being small caliber high capacity high velocity guns from FN and HK. Before that though, the answer most commonly arrived at was to fit a high capacity magazine and at least the option of a shoulder stock to a normal handgun. Often times the shoulder stock would double as a holster. This approach was seen with the Ingliss Hi Powers, Artillery Lugers, the afore mentioned Mausers, and continues to this day with the shoulder stocks that the Izzies will sell you to turn your Glock into an SBR.
That these types of guns are NFA weapons in the United States has limited their use, though even our own Army experimented with a hi capacity long barreled selective fire 1911 during WW2. Photos at the 8th Airforce Museum show that one American ace fighter pilot must have somehow obtained a prototype since he's posed with it as his personal weapon on his airplane.

I'd bring backup, my brother, a police sergeant, and my son, a federal agent. Alone, I'd bring my Kim Arends built 1911 .45 ACP.

My choice is the gun that rests next to my bed: 3rd generation Glock 22 with factory night sights. Gold Dot 180's. Never had a malf and accuracy that exceeds my skill as a shooter.

Shouldn't we be prepared to go into a gun fight with whatever we happen to be carrying at any given moment? If you don't trust your carry gun or your ability with it then it's time to make a change.
So, for me at this moment, it would be a custom 9mm S&W 360J. Tomorrow it'll be a .38 Super 1911.

My Glock 23, a superbly reliable handgun. I'll still be wishing for my 870 though.
Why no back up? A gun is a mechanical device which can malfunction. Most, if not all, LEO's carry a back up. The same generally applies to civilians. And no spare ammo? I've never heard of such a thing. Also, you may have to arm someone else. That being said, mine would be my main normal carry, a pair of 5903's in a Galco MC 244 and Galco SOB 244 worn in the 5 O'clock position. 16 rounds each of 124 grain 9mm, FMJ and JHP/XTP staggered in the magazines. I also carry BUG's, but that wasn't mentioned in the OP. But, as others have stated, if I knew I had a gunfight pending, I'd stay home. -Ed.
