Things will not be the same on the farm. I was expecting this day for some time but it came so fast. Today I lost my best friend and companion, a 12 year-old Collie named King Edward, or as I called him, just Edward. He was diagnosed with nasal cancer over a year ago. Nasal cancer is a cruel killer once it invades the brain and it was fast approaching that point. To spare him the pain, I had my vet put him to sleep this morning.

I loved Edward and he loved me. That love was strong enough to allow me to do what was best for him, even though it tore at my heart.

I miss you terribly buddy as do all the farm animals you so lovingly watched over. RIP King Edward.

This photo of Edward was taken in 2009.

Like a shadow, wherever I was is where he would be. Photo taken in spring of 2016.

I'm sorry for your loss, Bob. It hurts when you lose a beloved pet, for sure. In the last few years we have had to put down a Golden Retriever from cancer and two house cats from old age and infirmities. But when their quality of life goes away, I'd rather put them down peacefully than let them continue suffering.

I'm so sorry for your loss. He's a handsome fellow.

I've had to make the "tough decision" for several furry partners, over the years. It truly breaks my heart, every time.

In time, I find another pal. Never as a replacement for a previous loss, mind you. Sometimes I've picked them up at the Humane Society, and sometimes they've found me (being dropped at the ranch, in the dark).

My deepest condolences, and I wish you fond memories of your best friend. Time will heal.

Having been through this, my heart goes out to you. The adjustment will be tough. But the good memories will hopefully be what get you through. Prayers to you.

I'm very sorry for your loss.

My last dog was a tri-color Sheltie, who I lost 21 years ago. He looked a lot like a small version of your dog. He was the smartest dog I ever met and I still miss him.

I know how much it hurts but giving him peace was the right thing to do. You gave him a good life. All of us who love the friends we have in our little buddies face this. I miss the ones I have lost.
I love the ones I have left even more.
Jim

My condolences to you and those on the farm. It is one of the most difficult things to do but a compassionate one. King Edward was one handsome boy and I can tell he was happy being your shadow and work buddy. He will always be in your heart and memories.
