Retailers will generally not take back ammo, UPC present or not. If you are trying to send a box back to the manufacturer, they want the lot number (most often printed inside the box, if outside, don't cut that away).
I've sent ammo back to Federal, Winchester, and Remington. Federal and Winchester didn't care about the receipt, just the lot number.

None have complained about the missing UPC (they were all rebate purchases).
