last fall at a gs for $350... yeah 1000 rds .
now , there are talks of limiting or banning sales of 223/5.56 ammo because of some junk about them being used in certain types of arms , handguns or? some other drivel .
just out of curiosity i checked a couple of ammo sale sites and you guessed it , it is now around $500-$550 for a case !
i will say ... DONT BUY IT ! in the 2013 july/august issue of american handgunner , in the speak out column on page 17 there is some info as to how we created the shortage OURSELVES . this probably has some merit .
admittedly , there was talk about banning GUNS that fired this same caliber , but it is very akin to the same result on the ammo feeding frenzy .
i hope people wise up this time around and let the stuff draw some dust sitting on the shelves .
when i still see 22 caliber at gun shows and on line for $60 -$80 a brick and up, i realize these vultures paid a ridiculous price for it to start with ... and i for one will NEVER pay that to shoot the 22 ...!

FYI, the BATF issued a clarification this week because of the circulating rumor of a total ban on .223/5.56 ammunitions started by idiot News Reporters who can't find their backside with both hands.

The clarification stated that they are ONLY looking into possibly rescinding Exemptions for ammunition featuring bullets with Steel or Brass inserts. Solid Copper or lead based Copper Jacketed ammunitions do NOT require an exemption and are not subject to any bans. In addition the BATF is only requesting Public Discorse and Opinions at this point so this "ban" is nothing more that speculation right now.

So, M855 and similar ammunitions featuring steel inserts could end up being banned at some point. However, many members of Congress have expressed opposition to this and if the BATF proceeds with this ban they may find they are looking at some rather large cuts in funding.

So, what to do. Personally, I load my own ammo using bullets of much higher quality than M855 so I only regard this particular class of ammunition as a source for once fired cases and pure plinking ammo. So, I have no desire at all to pay inflated prices for ammo I mainly regard as a source of cases and I won't buy any until it's down to about 25 cents per round.

BATF....don't give then any foothold. They have BIG feet. I really like the idea of pistol caliber combos. 44mag lever action and a 44mag at your side. I'll take my chances with that combo....they make 'big holes'.

So, I wonder how much of a problem M855 and similiar ammunition has been in illegal activity in this country? The old "cop killer bullet" moniker won't work anymore because if I understand the messaging from the main stream media killing cops is rather in vogue these days.

I was in my LGS the other day. One of the gals there told me that people were buying whole cases of 223 ammo. The price was 40 some odd cents a round and it was 55 GECO. Now that is good ammo but, people can be dense in the head. I do have a bunch of 855 bullets hoarded though. They were cheep and I load blasting ammo with them.

And that is just the way they like it, I think. CNN milked the lost airplane for months with "Breaking News" that was more of "we don't have any idea where it went." An ambush killing gives them fodder for weeks.

All the more reason for you LE types to pay more attention to your surroundings and remember Terry v. Ohio is still the law of the land.
