I have been looking to get a new truck for the about six months and figured since this is a buyer market and my 1999 Chevy 3500 has 289,653 miles on the clock and is in need of some TLC (spelled about $600 in parts plus 6 tires to pass state inspection), my 2004 Chevy 2500HD has 158,151 and is needing nothing, and the mama's car is 2 years old with about 6,200 miles on the clock. It was time to trade the 1999 for a newer model.
This is my thinking I won't buy a Dodge since they may becoming a dumping grounds for the Italians. I won't buy a Chevy with all the company's problems [I have been buying GM cars and trucks since 1964] and they may close the doors for a lot longer than they plan.
I bought my first "alien vehicle", a 2009 Toyota Tundra with all the toys; what got me to go with the Toyota was 0% money for 60 months, dealer discount of the Tundra, and the money offered on my trade. Hope that I didn't make a error in judgement and this truck gives me the same service as I have come to expect with my trucks.

CZBrizn makes a good point, the future big three in US auto production may well be Toyota, Honda and Ford. The make cars here, they buy the parts here (at least in a percentage consistent with the "Big Three") and most importantly they employ US citizens. Now we need to move quickly to get the bankrupt companies broken up into whatever salvageable parts that are there (Jeep?) and get on with building cars.
My biggest fear is that Obama will run GM and/or
Chrysler like the Brits did Leland and then the BMC; subsidize non-competitive companies until they couldn't afford it. In my opinion this ran the potential completion out, as who can afford to compete with a company being subsidized by the tax payer. At one point TRV, a tiny sports car company, was the leading British producer in the UK, sad to see a once thriving industry choked by incompetence.

You made a good decision I just bought a Toyota FJ cruiser I have been buying Toyota / Lexus vehicles for years without a problem. The couple of times I felt guilty and bought GM I was sorry.

We bought a Toyota Tacoma last year. So far it has been a great truck. 25k on it so far.

Two weeks ago we bought a 09 Jeep Rubicon. Employee pricing, rebate, military rebate, 3 years of free oil changes, lifetime power train, lifetime bumper to bumper. I always wanted a new Jeep and figured might as well it now while the getting was good.

Neighbor just bought one himself- probably because he marvels at my Corolla with 273,000 miles and virtually no bills for repairs aside from brakes and exhaust over the years. Timing belt and an alternator...about it. His only complaint about his Toyota truck is gas mileage. He thought it would be better on mileage.

Leonard, are the blind spots as bad as everyone claims on those things? I like Toyota's and would consider one of the FJ's.

Yes my last not 2 but 9 new trucks were Chevy and I never had any major problems with GM product as long as I purchased the 454 V-8 or 8.1 Liter V-8 [I tow a 38 foot travel trailer]. But, when Clinton signed NAFTA, I noticed that more and more of the Chevy's I bought were Canadian. The 2004 was damn near 100% Canadian. The Tundra states 90% American.

The next problem for me was the fact that GM is still building the 2500 HDs and 3500 pickups but have discontinued the 454 and 8.1 Liter big block gas motors and are trying to force the customer to buy their problem prone Duramax engine. Chevy in 2007 said to hell with our good customers that need and buy the big block gas motors.

Another problem I have with GM is that they rolled over when the president told them to fire their CEO. I believe the CEO should have been years ago by the board of directors and should not have rolled over.

I also have a problem with GM & GMAC is that after taking tax payer $$$ that they were to pay back; they now are talking seriously of going bankrupt and screwing the tax payer.

I have also read where the GM warranties are going to be backed by the tax payer and not GM.

I may buy another GM in future if they start offering a product that fits my needs, pay back the tax payer for any all loans, and grow a set [tell the president, congress, etc to kiss it].

I was reading an article...I'll have to find it, but apparently Toyotas and Hondas have more American labor than GM.

Seems GM builds a good number of their engines in China.

love it got the 5.7(no timing belt like the 4.7 has)
its a power house, 4x4 about the biggest stock trucks out there.

Chrysler says their dealers sold about 300 units a yr,,the Japs sold like 1300.... guess because some people wont buy an Itailian vehcial an others wont buy cause their afraid a certain company will go bankrupt is gonna spell the doom of America as a economic leader.

Yeah right....OK. Whatever man. I am a military veteran and I have TWO Toyota's; a 2000 Pre-Runer Tacoma and a 2005 4Runner V8 4X4. I am American and bleed Red White and Blue. But I don't bleed Democrat nor UWA. That is who you can blame for the big three sucking it hard, not me and my awesome freaking Toyota's. Remember what Reagan told the big three when they whined about the Japanese (not Jap, that is a racial slur for those who are unaware)cars. He told them to make a better product and Americans would buy their products. They did and we did but then the UWA got stupid greedy and the rest is history.

Toyotas are good trucks. And their made in the USA! I do think they should have done a little more research into American slang terms before they put a big "TRD" on the side.

Yeah, I know it really stands for Toyota raceing dept. or something like that. But that isn't what the comedians at the local pub will say.

Just an observation. When was the last time you saw an autoworker wearing a Ford cap or a Chevy windbreaker. They don't, they all wear UAW logos on everything.

The UAW is out for themselves "in my opinion" and not for this country and that is why the big three are sucking hind teat. All of them have been slowly going out of business for 25 years and now that the government is in charge it will only hasten the process. Ford may survive if the government lets them continue to build trucks that people want but it looks like the feds are going to tell all of them what kind of cars to build whether people want to buy them or not.
