I finally found a Model 627 PC 2 5/8" barrel revolver in stock today and am picking it up tomorrow. I would have picked it up today, but the dealer who has it is a little over 2 hours northwest of me and the roads were treacherous this morning.

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to getting this one home. :)

Here it is!

I've learned to admire the UDR guns. That one is a very nice sample. Range report with pics please, after you have your hands on it of course.

Enjoy it, curious as to what you like and don't like about this gun.

Thanks, bronco. I'll be happy to post a range report and my opinions after giving it a good wringing out.

My shooting club has a heated, indoor pistol range so, if the roads stay passable, it shouldn't be too long before I get to shoot it.

Congratulations Steve. Glad you found one. Real nice shooter & you can shoot 357 all day long in it.

Steve - I am glad that you found one. It looks really good in the picture.
They are remarkable revolvers. Enjoy!:D

Sweet wheelgun.

I really respect those guns. 8 rds of .357 should pretty well handle most jams!!! Fast reload, too.

I'd love to check the grip fit in one of my paws.

Looking forward to the range report.

What type of leather do you have in mind?

That is pretty cool - even with the lock. Congrats.

Thanks, 6pack.

Regarding gun leather, I'm ordering a Lobo Gun Leather Enhanced pancake and Simply Rugged Sourdough pancake for it. I have examples of both of these holsters for different handguns and like them both, but I'm not sure which I'll like best with this big wheelgun. When I get them in, I'll give each a whirl and see what happens!

What I was thinking: this one of a VERY few S&W revolvers that I would buy, with or without the lock, due to it's uber 8x cool factor!

I saw a picture of one with a REALLY short barrel, and I wouldn't buy that one.

But the one pictured is about perfect in the barrel length, and grip size, IMHO.

I'm SURE you will enjoy it!:D

Thanks, guys!

I have a couple of items inbound that I'm waiting for before I go to the range. I ordered a set of Pachmayr Decelerator grips. The supplied Eagle Secret Service grips look great, but are just too short for me. I also ordered a Dillon Precision moon clip loading/unloading tool to save what's left of my old, arthritic fingers. :D

I'll likely get to the range one day next week and will then report back with my impressions.

That think is nice! I'm really looking forward to hearing if it shoots anywhere near as nice as it looks. Though - I'm with you on the grips. I don't care much for using the short boot grips. Even when they're purty.

You're going to love the mooner/demooner tool. I've got one a lot like it for my .45 ACP wheelies. I showed how it worked to a friend who had been struggling to load / demoon his clips - all he said was "You're kidding. Dang."

Nice snag! One of the FEW currently produced Smiths that remotely interest me. Should make for a very nice carry gun.

Visiting my Family in Jersey, Barnegat area in Ocean County....30" of snow the day after Christmas. Drifts even deeper.

Enjoying retirement??

I held one at the local shop and its a handfull for sure. I can't help but admire the thing although its not something I could likely use. I'm too small and its too big.

Still, the love is there and it may well be one of the few new Smith's that will make it to the top rankings! Good shooting and hang on to it! :)

Thanks, men.

FN: I'm not enjoying retirement, I'm loving it!

The seller's photo I posted in the first post was great photography, but, as it turns out, it wasn't of the revolver he sold me, so I've replaced it with one I took myself this afternoon. Though the photography isn't nearly as good, at least the new photo is of the actual 627 I own. :)

Carl/exfebee: I don't know if you were around when this "Defensive Tactics" manual was issued, but, if not, I can assure you it was cutting edge stuff at the time. ;)

Here's a pic of the right side.

As a matter of fact, I just handled/fondled the .44Mag/629 version of that this afternoon at a local dealer. Beautiful PC action/trigger and full-length ejector rod but I agree the wood grips, though very flat thickness-wise, need at least a 1/2 groove for the added pinky control. And, while I'm a big-bore fanatic, you gotta admire 8 rounds-moonied .357 capacity. Only way it could be better is with slotted/pinned vs dovetailed red-ramp-painted front sight so you could swap in a XS big dot. Enjoy her and, of course, we want personal pics!

Might have to have my wife try and see if she can handle this over her old M36 frame wise. I would feel better with her having the 3 extra shots over 5. Bad thing is she likes pocket carry....

Good luck, these things are HUGE compared to a 36.
