It seems like many who have bought the SD ve either in the .40or the 9mm version, are unhappy with the fundamentals of the weapon. They don't like the Trigger pull, the Recoil Spring and poly Guide Rod, the Plastic Sights, the Take Down Bar, the list is endless! Then they go on to buy and install all the enhancements they deem necessary to improve the operation of the piece.
Many, have problems with the installations, (mostly because they are inept, or can not read instructions) and wind up posting their difficulties with questions on how to solve them. Come on, the guns are very well made, reliable and very inexpensive!
They were designed for SD not competitive shooting! Many spend hundreds of dollars to make improvements that are not necessary.
I enjoy shooting my stock .40SD at the range and when I'm done, it sits on the night table at home for SD.
If It Ain't Broke......

Well...personally, I don't like to mess around with the fire control group, with 1911s being the sole exception, and only then when done by a competent gun smith. I actually like a SD/HD gun with no external safety to have a heavier trigger; the trigger pull on the SDVE guns are lighter than the DA pull on most revolvers. I think if you buy a gun with a heavy trigger, you should learn to shoot it that way...but my opinion and $5 will get you a cup of coffee at Starbuck's.

When it comes to the other common accessories, I think it falls into the category of personal preference.

Mine is stock has been for better than 3 years & I would not change a thing. I would like to compare it to a new one to see just how much if any the trigger has changed. I don't even try to double tap never seen the purpose of it anyway. I do try to trian for a self-defense scenario with my self-defense 9ve.

That said it is your gun , for now anyway , do what ever you like with it ;)

I just bought a new SD9VE (they were on sale again at Academy.) I had sold my others (I've had three 9s and one 40) so I am going by memory, but the trigger on this one seems much better. In fact, I'd say it's comparable to the trigger on the Ruger 9E that I recently bought..slightly heavier, but smoother.

I don't seem to have any problem with the take down lever on this one either...whereas on my others, I needed (or at least thought I did) the extended lever. I like the idea of the stainless steel RSA, so I might get one...but it's not a priority. The two things I am going to buy are the M&P rear sight and a NDZ slide cover plate with the Texas flag on it. Other than that, just more magazines and ammo.

With the exception of Talon Grips, my SD is stock.

I've never tried them. I've had a couple of different slip-on type grips, but they tended to move around, and I didn't want to glue them in place.

How do you like your Talon grips?

I love them. I got the rubberized ones, the sand paper ones would not be good for carry. They go on easily, takes all of 2 minutes.

What about when you want to take them off ? I have not heard but if they stick on that good how hard are they to take off & or do they leave any residue behind ?

They come off easily and leave no residue but I used rubbing alcohol after taking the sand paper ones off anyway. I replaced them with the rubberized ones.

I've had my SD40VE for almost two years. I did a light polishing on the trigger bar assembly and install the Apex spring kit. The trigger pull is still a bit heavy at 6lbs 1oz, but is very smooth. Nowhere near as light as the 4.5lb pull on my Wife's Ruger LC9S, but still good. That's as light as I'll comfortably go for a pistol with no external safety. The only other thing I've done is actually remove the white dots from the rear sight. With my eyes, I can focus on the front sight a lot better now. She still shoots great and I carry it every day. This pistol is still a keeper.

Matt

Love mine, only thing I did was replace the narrow Slide Lock Lever with a wider one.
I would fight the stock one until my fingers got sore to release the slide
S&W needs to make the Slide Lock Lever 1mm longer
