I figured this was as good a place as any to post this...

At the new range I belong to, one of the benefits is, for your birthday, you get a free rental of a Class 3, F/A weapon. Whatever they got, plus a few rounds of ammo to shoot up.

Well, I've only fired a few rounds of F/A in my life, from a HK MP-5, so I was sort of looking forward to this. Sort of a "bucket list" deal.

I selected some kind of M4...or something like it, an AR type carbine anyway, with a red dot sight. When I asked what brand it was they described it as a "Frankengun." OK. Good enough for me.

They fetched the rifle, gave me a quick course on "This does this and that does that" and three boxes of PMC ammo and explained to hold low at first because the muzzle would climb...OK. Got it.

Went into the range, set the target back to 75 feet (as far as it would go), loaded the magazine, and fired off one shot in semi...BAM! Louder than I expected, and more recoil. Not bad. Just more than I expected, but then I didn't know what to expect. I'd never fired anything like this before. A "push", not a "kick."

I fired off a few more shots in semi, ran the target back and checked and saw that I had at least hit the paper. You see, I make NO claim to being a rifleman. Except for squirrel hunting with a 22, I have almost NO experience with a rifle at all. And I was standing on my back legs. When I shoot a 22, I almost always find a tree trunk to use as a rest.

Ok..I'm hitting paper, about where I was aiming at least. Let's try this again.

Did I mention that this thing, whatever it was, had the absolute WORST trigger I have ever used on anything? It made my Hi-Point C-9, seem like a Colt Gold Cup in comparison. No idea if this is normal for this type gun or not, but I'll just have to work around it. Set the switch to "happy" and pulled until I thought my finger would break...Bruppppp...Three, maybe five rounds. Again...same thing. I can see the red dot come off target. Pull it back. Ok...I'm starting to get the feel. Finish off the magazine, reload and repeat. Again...By the time I've enmptied the third magazine, I'm starting to feel like the dot is staying where it's supposed to.

Well, that was fun. Not as fast as I expected. I was able to control three or four round bursts I think. I was sort of surprised how long it took me to empty a magazine to tell you the truth, but I was making a conscience effort to NOT "hose" the target. And I was holding on the lower part of the "pin."

I was able to hit the paper most of the time.

Not great shooting, but like I said, I don't shoot rifles often. I will say it was fun, but not something to make me want to run out and buy an AR. My wife is a member also, and her birthday is coming up. She said I can have her turn. I told her she might as well try it once.

Cool! ARs come in 3 round burst per pull.

I don't know what they had or the parts used for the build but generally ARs don't have match triggers. The one you shot could have been overly dirty from the last shoot. Just out of curiosity next time you're at a gun store ask to see a new AR and try the trigger.

Belated Happy Birthday! :)

It is amazing how loud they (or 5.56) are. Sounds like you had fun as well so that's always a good day shooting.

It may well have been dirty being a rental gun, but I've been told that F/A weapons are supposed to have a heavier trigger if for no other reason to cut down on bump fire. It makes sense that you'd want a heavier trigger when I think about it, but then what I know about full auto weapons could be written on the head of a pin, with room left over for the King James Bible.

And it WAS fun. I'd hate to have to pay for the ammo too keep one of those things running, but it was fun. As I look at that target I can see where the groupings were starting to tighten up as I got the hang of it.

But there is no reason why an AR can't have a match trigger, if you want that. Fulton Armory offers these trigger options:

2 Stage, Non-Adjustable, NM Service Rifle Trigger Add $165.00
2 Stage, Adjustable, Geisselle, NM Service Rifle Trigger Add $325.00
2 Stage, Adjustable, Geisselle, DMR Trigger (NRA) Add $325.00

I got the Non-Adjustable NM Service Rifle Trigger on mine, and it is excellent. It doesn't feel like it would be too light for full auto, but I don't have that capability anyway.

Right but you won't usually find them on factory guns and not on anything in select fire and that us what the topic is about.

Not always.

The closest civilian Colt available version of the M4 is the LE6921

The Military / Law Enforcement models are as follows
RO977 : Flat top, Safe/Semi/Full Auto
RO979 : Flat top, Safe/Semi/Burst
RO777 : Fixed handle, Safe/Semi/Full Auto
RO779 : Fixed handle, Safe/Semi/Burst

I believe that for the U. S. Military M4A1s, during the last few years they have been upgraded with a heavy barrel, a full auto trigger, and an ambidextrous safety. Prior to that, they had only 3-shot burst triggers.

I've shot full auto AR, Thompson and MP5........ I'm kind of Quigley like..... "never had the need for one".

Course not much need for suppressive fire in "the burbs of the Burgh"........

but they are kind of fun........ expensive to feed....... but everyone should do it at least once.................

Happy birthday............

:D

First FA gun I shot was a Thompson. Next was the M3 "Grease Gun."
Then an MP5. All fun to try if the range has one. My favorite of the
three is the Grease Gun. Very slow rate of fire and controllable.

Shot a bunch more FA guns since. Even used them in side matches at the old Second Chance Bowling Pin Shoot. Lots of fun.

Full auto is fun if someone else is paying for ammo. My favorite was a M-2 50 cal but it wasn't really a play toy.. Thompson was great BAR was really neat AKs M-16s much fun but for serious was a Carl Gustaf M 1940 suppressed sub gun. Not as fast as an MP5 but it was mine. The truth is FA turns a bunch of money into a bunch noise poste haste..God I love it!!

I have fired a few FA guns, and they are certainly fun! The best IMO was a 7.62x39 AR. Chewed up a bit of turf with that one.....

As many have pointed out, though, not much use for one......

...I've scratched a few FAs off my bucket list...at local machine gun shoots...

...BAR (several)...Thompson...m1919...MG-42...AK-47...

...that's probably the most complete part of my bucket list...that and going 150 miles per hour on a motorcycle...

Going 150 on a MC could bring on the end of adding items to the bucket list..crack in the road..blown tire... Large mosquito... could end it all. LOL!! 170 in a car is wayyy too dangerous..ask me how I know.... but about 1000 MPH in a F-4 was an absolute hoot....once anyway. Even with the A$$ chewing the pilot and I both got. I was not a RO

Nice! By far my favorite is the M249 SAW. I find it very fun when my uncle pays for the ammo. Sam only lets me shoot it once every few years now, unfortunately.

I got to shoot the MP 5 , short bursts from the hip @ 25 yards and was amazed that I was on target, but the best F/A I had the pleasure to shoot was a 1919 Browning on a ground, prone, tripod. Destroyed a pumpkin methodically at 50yds.
I hope I get to try an M16 F/A someday.

I've had a lot of full auto experience but it's less fun when it's your job.

An in spec military trigger is typically 7-9lbs...Geisselle makes a nice full auto unit, but it's unlikely one will be encountered in the wild. For semi auto guns there's numerous options for improved triggers.

I like AR-15's, but they're what I grew up on. Much like those averse to Glocks, if your idea of a service rifle is all steel and walnut it may not be your thing.

One day a few years ago I got to shoot an M4, an AK47 and a Sten gun, all select fire. Out on the prairie, with nothing to shoot at, I had had about enough after shooting a couple of mags through each, a few more through the AK.

Full auto was big chuckles for a little bit, but pretty soon the waste of ammo started to bug me, even though I wasn't paying for it.
