The procedure itself is a piece of cake, the prep is a piece of .........well best of luck to you and heres hoping for good results. The test is worth the inconvience.

The average adult colon is about 6 feet long. Mine is about 4 1/2 and I have the scars to prove it.
Cancer isn't the only concern. In my case it was Diverticulitis that resulted in having my innards rearranged.
The test may make you uncomfortable for a day or two. But its sure better than the discomfort of surgery and a lengthy recovery.
I strongly urge everyone over the age of 50 to have a colonoscopy. Earlier if you have a family history or digestive tract issues.
It can save your life.

Thank you all very much. I appreciate all the kind words and support. This will be my 3 time at this rodeo and I'm not expecting any surprises but I'll still be glad when it is over. As of the last time I am on a schedule of every 3 years for this but if I get a clean bill of health this time I may get to stretch that out a little bit.
By the way I was looking at that bowel prep kit. I'm very impressed and cautiously optimistic. It no longer involves drinking gallons of foul tasting liquid. I have to drink 16 oz of solution at 6PM the day before and another 16 oz at 10 PM with 16 oz of plain water in between. That will be a walk in the park compared to the huge volume I remember from the 2 times before. I am even allowed to add Crystal Lite to it if I want to as long as it isn't red. We have some lemonade flavor so I'll use that if I need to. Oh yeah, and the kit includes nausia pills if I need 'em.
I'll report back here after a day or two and let y'all know what it's like. Again many thanks!

Best wishes for you Jack. I had my first one done this past month. I asked the doc if they would at least buy me flowers and dinner afterward....no such luck. The good thing was I don't have to go back for ten years....
I've had five and getting set for number 6 in two weeks. The doctor always harvests a good crop of polyps that have grown in the past two years; those things are pre-cancerous. Guess I'll be doing it at two year intervals until I croak.

Whelp, I'll add my $0.02 to the discussion. I had a good friend who died of colon cancer and the only boss (now a friend) I ever had who had enough faith in me to get me promoted was yanked from the stage 4 jaws of death by skilled care. I've had the procedure several times and drinking the prep and the attendant results are, indeed, the worst of it. In fact, y'all have reminded me I need to get to the doc for a referral for another go (pun intended).
To those waiting for the procedure, buck up, it's only one day and it could save your life.
To those who are of the age and are hesitant or afraid, pull on your big boy pants or big girl panties, suck it up and get the job done; it's not fair to your loved ones or yourself to put everyone through dying of colo-rectal cancer. It's a long, horrible, painful process and it won't make for good memories.
If I seem overly harsh, it's because I've seen what it's like and I've been through the procedure myself several times. It's not as bad as the alternative, believe me.

I hope all goes well for you and they find absolutely nothing. I'm 54 now and have yet to have this done. My wife keeps after me to make an appointment and your thread has prompted me to do so.

And do yourself a favor, when you go in for the procedure skip all the "I usually only do this if you've bought me dinner and flowers" and similar sexual jokes. The doctor and staff hear these several times a week and really find them tiresome.

I feel sorry for those guys-that's a tough way to make a living.....Imagine THAT Monday. Well honey tomorrow I've got the first floor of the happy valley seniors home coming in.......
Last time I had mine the recovery area sounded like an Evinrude smoke off

I've only had it done once, but it wasn't bad. I slept through the whole thing, and apparently said some funny stuff while under, the nurses were grinning at me in recovery and I didn't know why.
The worst part was the prep, made worse by the fact that I started it early in the morning the day BEFORE the exam, and by noon I was devoid of anything resembling food in my system...........then had to wait another 18 hours! Being hypoglycemic, it made for a pretty crummy day. But it was worth the peace of mind it gave me!

One saved my life several years ago also. Only hint of a problem was blood in stool with the test my doctor ran with my physical. No hint of a problem other than that. They were able to remove a large precancerous mass and probably saved my life.
My wife just had one and her prep was not as bad as in years past. She didn't have to drink nearly as much of the prep as you used to have to. Still though she owned the master bathroom the day before.
