I have a sickness called Snub Nosed Revolvers

Interesting topic. I find myself on the outside as I don't generally like "snubbies" and I own two of them. Both are Night Guards and if I had my druthers they would have longer barrels. The 386 NG is 2.5" which I find almost offensive as the short ejector rod will not cleanly eject 357 Mag brass and occasionally hangs up on 38 Specials. It really should be a 3". The 325 NG is 2.75" and does eject the short 45 ACPs but I would prefer it as a 3.5".

All this begs the question, at what barrel length does a revolver become a "snubby"?
For me it's around 3" and that is somewhat dependent on the frame size. A 3" N-frame is definitely a snubby. A 3" L-frame or K-frame is in a grey area. Probably not real snubbies but they're close. And a 3" J-frame is practically a target gun or would be with adjustable sights. (lol)

To each his/her own and YMMV!

Dave

You got to draw the line somewhere.

My definition of snub nose or snubby it is 2 1/2'' or under period. Those 3''N frame Smith's are just short barrel revolvers. I have a 547 3'' and to me its a short barrel revolver! Ruger with their 2 3/4 is a rule onto its self.

Fell free to disagree, we can have a short debate!:D

I go more by proportional appearance than the ruler, although I'll use the ruler to make my point. My 640 Pro's barrel is about ½" longer than the cylinder, and it looks like a snubby.

My 460ES's barrel is about ½" longer than the cylinder, and it looks like a snubby, too, but it doesn't meet your 2½" rule.

A 3" revolver doesn't "look" like a snubby; on that we agree.

Cheers,

Bob

I particularly like the K frame snubs. Here are two of my favorites. First a Model 64 followed by a Md 15. Both of them are currently on active duty as home defense weapons.

Both are COOL guns you have there! The 15 snub especially! I was looking for 1 for a while. It did not happen. I got 2 nice substitutes though. Bob

Thanks Bob,
Yes, I'm really fond of the 15 too! There's just something about the square butt with a 2 inch barrel. I know it is not to everyone's liking but it sure is for me. I hope you find yours soon.

I'll play.

Hard to own just one when you have multiple vehicles and hiding holes around the house.

Old photo---pretty sure they have multiplied since this was taken. :)

This little fella is my only snub nosed. But of all my handguns, it's the one I trust with my life daily:)

I have one of those "little fellas" and it about breaks my hand every time I pull the trigger... As much as I like the weight (or lack thereof), it feels like I'm shooting the bullet right out of my hand. I've come to the realization that I like the grip size and weight of the K-frame and N-frame snubbies...

Here are some of my 5-Screw M&P snubbies:

... and a few of my 1950's N-frame snubbies...

WOW!!!! JUST WOW

my snubbies

S&W's : nickel 36,37,38,340PD,60,640,15,19,3 in mod 27,29,,629,657,686,696 and a 2 1/2 Ruger stainless Red Hawk 44 magnum and last but least is a Colt Detective special. All are under 3 inch . Wish I knew how to post pics.

Obviously I don't have it as badly as some of you. My crop is five J frames, three 60s, a 38, and 42, and a pre 10. I never caught the bug for snubbies larger than .38/.357. To me the useful big bores start at 4" and end at 6 1/2".

Best,

Jack
