I like my 5906, but....

Hold the 5906 more than the Hi Power for the next 5 or 6 months. Then your problem might be solved. However you may be asking why your Browning does not feel as good in your hands as your 5906.

Actually, I do. The HP is more of a safe queen/range toy (it was a gift from a friend - normally I don't keep safe queens) and the 5906 is daily carry. :o

It doesn't feel BAD, mind you ... just not as good as the HP.

Some of that, I admit, is the problem with my freakish "bison hands," as they've been called. Huge palms and short fat fingers .... :(

I'm with you. I have both, and to me, there's no comparison. Now that I think about it...my 39-2 fits my hand very well, but if I carry a single-stack, it's my 3913 (which doesn't fit as well). If I'm hauling a hi-cap (pretty rare), I carry a 5906, which doesn't feel anywhere near as good as my Browning.

My terminal confusion with this is why I tote a wheelgun 95% of the time!

Because you need to Trade it for a 6906 (that is more equal to a HP  ).

Why?

No gun feels as good in my hand as the Browning High Power. The CZ 75 comes close but at the end of the day it is not a BHP. My 6906 doesn't even feel close even though I like the gun. I guess it is a matter of getting your mind right.

Everyone is different! ( no surprise, right? ) I always wanted a hi power because of reputation. A local gun shop had 1, and it just did not feel right in my hand at all. Glad I did not internet buy one. Did just get a 5906. Beautiful, but the Hogue grips are kind of chunky for me. Want some smaller ones. The odd thing is all of my Smith revolvers have target grips on them. Go Figure! Bob

No surprise in the slightest! :D

I'm curious do you find that you are noticeably more accurate with one than the other?

It's a bit of a wash. The HP fits better and has a better trigger, but the 5906 has waaaay better sights. Under "ideal indoor range conditions" I can get slightly better groups with the HP, but under "typical outdoor range conditions" they both tend to be about MOPP at 25 yds when I do my part.

Everyone in this thread needs a 39-2, then.

The 39-2 fits like a hi-power.

Except for those of us old enough to have been raised in an era when two-digit Smith autos were .

But maybe you meant a 639? :p

:D

I had a 6906 and I've had a bit of seller's regret for letting it go. Not QUITE enough to get one back, though.

Been a officer in a army for 33 years where the HP was official sidearm for some years. So I've handled a few  It is not even close to being superior to many other autos ;)

Nope. I meant the 39-2.

YEP but my pair of Gen-3 S&W's ( 4043 and a 1066 ) ain't bad;).
Owned my mid 90's MK III High Power for right at 20 years now simply because nothing else feels SO good in my hand!!

However this one is a close second in feeling right in my hand. We spent some time on the range together earlier today and the ol 4043 is the only other semi auto I shoot as constantly with as my old High Power! No tactical tupperware for this old guy!

PS the high power is my dress up carry gun ( the HP is always carried cocked and locked with one in the pipe and retention strap under the hammer like John Browning intended it to be!) and she sees regular range use.I however carry the SS 4043 just about every day.

My 5906 has Hogue grips on it. They seem a little too chunky feeling for me. (gun came with them) Are the factory grips a little smaller? Also are the curved backstrap, & straight backstrap grips interchangeable on all 5906's? Any information will be appreciated. Thanks, Bob

The first handgun I ever bought was a Browning Hi Power. I've got plenty of S&W second and third generation semi-autos, and like them a lot. But, if I had to get by with only two handguns; they could easily be that Hi Power and a J-frame.

Interesting thread. I have to agree nothing feels as good to me as my Hi-Powers. Having said that I love third gen Smiths and enjoy my 5906 immensely. Up to this point I can honestly say I shoot Hi-Powers better than anything else I have shot. I do pretty well with the 5906, CZ75, P99AS, P226 but really struggle with Glocks, Beretta 92 and the HK USP. I did notice something interesting when shooting Hi Powers. A buddy and I have 8 between us from the late 60's to the present. They have different sights, grips, trigger quality etc. but as we passed them back and forth it became apparent they all shot great. The 69 model with the tiny nub sites, the different grips, it just didn't matter. We could just pick them up and shoot great groups with them. I really thought there would be more of a variance with the ones with better sites and triggers. It was quite eye opening.

I yanked the Hogues off mine for that very reason, because they were a VERY too chunky feeling for me. :D

I've swapped OEM backstraps around on my 5906 without problem, and would guess that they're the same.

Maybe one of our compadres with more than one of the thing will step in and confirm?

I dunno. I read a review of the new Sig 320 the other day and the reviewer said when he held the 320 it felt like he was holding a HP. He even posted pictures of each one superimposed on the other and they are pretty darn close size wise. Just sayin.
