I haven't shot the 15-22 for sometime and decided to break it down and clean it. When reassembling, but before installing the upper, I placed the safety on "fire" and pulled the trigger with my thumb on the hammer and gently let the hammer move into the
fired positions. Then I moved the safety to "safe". This may have been a mistake. At any rate I can't move the safety to "fire", I can't pull the hammer back to a cocked position, and the charging handle will not cock the bolt. A few years ago I replaced the factory trigger with a HyperFire trigger, but I don't think that is an issue. Any suggestions?

I have not worked with a Hyperfire trigger but all other triggers will not allow the safety to move to safe while the hammer is down(fired). The original 15-22 safety is plastic, perhaps it gave enough to slide by then not allow further movement. To fix it, punch the pins out to allow the trigger assembly some movement, put the safety back in the fired position. Cock the hammer and everything should go back together.

Have you tried removing the grip and letting the selector detent pin and spring fall out? It may help with moving the selector.

If you try this be super careful on tightening the grip screw, They strip easy.

It might even work if, as you begin removing grip screw, just keep slowly backing it out and give a few firm taps to the lower. Do this with rcvr inverted. That might free it. If none of this works, just punch the pins out and reinstall assembly.

Thanks for the comments. I got it working without drama. I also looked at a good YT video by Guns & Accessories for grip replacement that helped me understand the springs detents and problem of over-tightening the grip screw. I only had to loosen the grip screw enough to be able to put the safety onto "fire".
