I love 45 ACP in revolvers..Anyone else?

The 45 is IMHO about the best combat and PD round in the world, but I fail to see the popularity of it as a woods gun. I would not want it over a 41 or 44 special in the woods and maybe even a 45 Colt, I would rate it as a poor choice for a Mountain Gun where bear, hogs and large cats roam. To me the round is just not suited for anything but the city, the battlefield or a target gun. On several occasions both recently and years past I have passed on some good buys on 45 ACP revolvers for this reason.

I tried reloading them one time many years (about 30+) ago, but the small case and short bullets were rough on my big fingers, 9mm was the same problem. So I finally got away from 45 ACP & 9 mm shooting and until recently when I had a chance to score a Para 1911 14-45 Gun Rights model for under $700 and use it for a HD gun that kept in the master bedroom.

I guess you are right about the LSWC, I shoot a lot of that in 357, 10 mm and 44, but jut never thought about it in 45ACP for some reason.

I have a 625JM. Love that gun; replaced the grips so the wood won't get scratched, etc with a decelarator grip. Very accurate, easy to shoot. The only "humbug" is loading and unloading the rounds/casings on the moon clips.

The 22-4 spends time in a full flap crossdraw rig as a woods walking gun.

I've ccw'd the 25-14 (Tyler T-Grip added) in an O'Rourke pancake rig made for my 3" 610-2 and really liked it. The 610 still draws first duty when I want a wheelgun but the 25-14 is a close second.

I have a 610-3 6.5", 610 5" that need to find their brothers in 3" & 4" models.

The 610 5" is the sweatest shoot S&W I have ever shot, hope my new 686 5" is as well. Hope to get the 7 shot out next week for a try out. It's NIB and only 1 of 1125 according to S&W when I called.

I had a 25-2 for a few years, never liked the longer barrel length, then I played around with a 1917 Brazilian for awhile. Always on the lookout for a 4" 625, never found it. Then last year I lucked into a lightly used (as in 3 shots fired) TRR 22-4 for $600 and snapped it up. It's now my ESR gun for IDPA.

I've got a moutanin gun .45 ACP.
For double action it's the best shooting S&W I own. An 8" gong at 50 yds DA is easy with this gun.

FRIMO's 25-2 with the maple grips is a fine looking piece. Darn near made me drool.
Is that something that would see much use or is it strictly a collectors item?

I too love a S&W 45 ACP revolver...

A S&W 44 Mag is very hard to beat as it can be loaded from mild to wild...

I have used a S&W Mod 25 in 45 ACP and a 1911 in 45 AC as "work guns", and I carried them in the field as well...

With the proper bullets/loads I consider them adequate in black bear/wild pig areas. I have shot whitetail and mule deer with the 45 ACP, and I have also shot several black bears [not with a 45 ACP], so I have some real life experience in such matters...

The 45 ACP S&W Revolver is a Primo self defense gun, and a pretty good field gun as well...

I prefer it to the 357 Mag.

Ballistics is one down side for the 45ACP in the woods where medium game is involved, where other rounds have better ballistic range such as the 10 mm auto for one.

My main beef with 45 ACP is the same as for 9mm and other short case rounds, they are a real PIA when reloading if you have big fingers and using a single stage press even though I no longer use one.

Ok, I admit I am a 10 mm fan, did you ever had a doubt?

However that 45ACP Revo ought to be an excellent paper puncher and no chasing empties like with bottom feeders.

Moonclips are cheap - $35/100 from Ranch Products in blued steel - delivered. I have 105 loaded layered in two .223 metal ammo boxes. !5 more in each of two Tupperware tubs - ready for the range bag. Starline revolver-only brass - Fed LP primers - Win 230gr FMJ over 4.8 gr Titegroup - 800 fps. I know ACPs were the topic, but I have some 250gr Gold Dots & 255gr LSWCs pushing 900 fps from .45 Auto Rims - .45 Colt loads. Love that 625JM - it'll be five in Feb. Great buy!

1980 6" Model 25-2 . . .

Chopped and customized in the '80's to 3 1/4" barrel. Radically narrowed, rounded and smoothed trigger for double action use. Best single and double action trigger I've ever encountered!!!

It STILL thinks it is a TARGET revolver too, by the way it shoots and groups. The last revolver I'd ever sell!

SAME revolver from the FRONT . . . with those big ol' Speer hollowpoint "Flying Ashtrays!" . . .

Regarding field use of the 45 ACP revolver.

With Plus P loads from Buffalo Bore, or equal handloads, I would rate the 45 ACP as adequate for most of the lower 48.

I carried my Light Weight Commander on my first 2 black bear hunts in Northwest Montana, which is flush with grizzlys....

After seeing how tough and thick even Black Bear bones were, I started carrying a 4" 44 Mag...

But I do think a hard cast 230 or 240gr bullet from a 45 ACP revolver, or the 230 Hornady Jacketed Buffalo Bore Plus P in 45 ACP, would penetrate a black bears skull.

I have shot whitetail deer and a mule deer with a 45 ACP.
It did the job, but it ain't no 44 Mag.

I have a question for those that know. I just came across one of what I believe to be a Belhert snubby in .45acp. It looks like the one in the pictures that I saw in this thread. Cut down to snubby lenth with k-frame sized grip. What is a fair price for these? And is there a way to know who did the work for sure?
