I never hear anything about the m13

I have a custom ppc built on a 13-3 that I love to shoot,(except for the weight). But I notice no one ever mentions the 13.

Can you tell me anythinng about? When was it made, was it just a 10 with longer chambers, etc.

I think the 13 gets discussed a decent amount here. I also think perhaps the model 65 overshadows it. I have a model 13. I like it. It's just "okay". I think that's the problem, if there is one.

I agree that there is not much discussion about the 13, but S&W put out so many different models that nearly every model but the 686 is discussed too little.
Love the 13-3.

Well, it is a Model 10 with longer chambers, so yeah . . . In truth, the 10, 64, 13, 65, 15, 67 and to a certain extent, the 19 and 66, are all the same gun, only different . . . They all have their own appeal and often the owner's appreciation is based on personal experiences or emotional attachment as much as anything. One is really not "better" than than other.

That said, the three-inch Model 13 is a desirable gun. It was FBI issue for a number of years so that adds to the panache.

What do you want to know? Yes, It's basically a 10, chambered for .357 Magnum. It's also a 19 with fixed sights and no ejector shroud. It was introduced in the 70s at the request of the New York State Police after some testing was done with some model 10-6 revolvers that were factory chambered in .357. The 3" version of the 13 was also the last standard issue revolver for the FBI before the switch was made to automatics.

Actually the 357 mag cylinders are slightly longer externally than the 38 special cylinders also. Not just deeper chambers. At least that is the case in the earlier models. I don't own a later model 10, or a model 13, so possibly at some point they went to the same length as the 357 cylinder. But both my model 19-3s have slightly longer cylinders (in addition to the recesses) than any of my model 10s or m&p 38 specials.

This 3" nickel 13-3 is a fantastic shooter. Recently gave it to my son so I still get to shoot it, and he brings the ammo!

I just bought a 13=2 and it shoots within an inch at 50 feet with loads I had for my snub 19. A bargain and a real S&W for less than the cost of a classic with the wind up key.

Lets not talk about them TOO much, I still want some more for my kids.

The only problem with the Model 13, especially the 3", is there's not enough of them around!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've got a 2 1/2 inch 19 and a 66 as well as a pair of 3 inch 65s and trio of
3" 66s.


But I still want a 3" 13..........

A model 10 heavy barrel and 13 share the same frame and internals. The difference is the barrel and cylinder are unique to to the longer 357 mag case. The cylinders are longer and the barrel face is shorter to accommodate.

I still haven't seen a 13 three inch for sale so I decided to make my own. This is a 10-8 round butt frame with a 13-3 barrel and cylinder

Building One

I bought a model 10 minus barrel. Picked up a 3" heavy barrel and 357 cyl off ebay.
$300 total. I will sell the 38 cyl to get some money back. When a get all the pieces will try to post pics

Gentlemen, please do not overlook metalurgy, the heat treatment that Model 13 cylinders have in order to withstand the higher pressure of .357 magnum cartridges!!!..

I've always found the Model 13s to be particularly cool guns.

M13's are a work horse, not too much extra glamor, mostly all business.

I lucked into my 3" nickel M13-3 on a GB auction when nobody else was looking. With the right holster and some nice grips , it would make for a nice BBQ gun, it is a 1985 gun.

I believe the North Carolina state game wardens were at one time issued the M13. My best friends dad always talks about his M13 and what a death ray it was. He killed a big buck with it while on patrol.

I bought a blue 3" M13 for my then fiancee. When we agreeably went our separate ways, she declined to sell it back to me. It was a fine shooter and balanced beautifully.
About a year later, I consoled myself by buying a 3" M66, so all's well.

Both still boxed and unfired.

Pretty sure I have a like new nickel 4" somewhere. Good guns, I had a blued one years ago that was a great shooter.
