Impulse purchased a model 29… paid next to nothing for it. I went to do my background check at my FFL today and I noticed that the frame is marked 29 1, serial number is S2271xx

I will get pictures and more info when I pick it up next week.

Would be very interested to know more about it and what I should do with it. Barrel is ported and it has black rubber grips on it.

That is quite a find. The SN is in the right serial range for a 29-1 and that one will make a total of 60 or so (I'm not sure of the exact number, maybe jcelect will be along with the current tally). Anyway, a pretty rare gun. Those in nice condition are $3,000+/-. We definitely want to see pictures. The porting and non-factory grips don't help on price but if it is otherwise in good condition it is a very desirable piece. It should have "cokes" target grips and those go for $500-$700 these days for nice ones.Congratulations on finding it and welcome to the Forum.

Welcome to the Forum! Congratulations on your find, and you made quite an entrance with that extremely rare Model 29-1...many of us will be interested to see some pics and hear more about it. Yes, too bad it has been ported but it's still a 29-1 and quite rare and valuable. You can most likely find a pair of Coke Bottle stocks for that revolver, but they will be pricey. Since it's already been modified and its true collector value has been affected, you might just want to have one of our Forum stock gurus (i.e. 44maggett) make you a beautiful set of custom wood stocks. Just my 2 cents. Looking forward to hearing more about your revolver.

As noted above, these pistols are a grail gun for many due to their rarity.
I would find a period correct donor gun or barrel and swap them out. Also, cokes and a presentation box.
It will be worth the effort and investment.

Maybe, maybe not. A gun bought for "next to nothing" which has been ported and has rubber grips is likely not in great condition. It may not be easy to find a barrel that matches the finish, especially if the frame has quite a bit of wear, and a refinish will be expensive and obvious. I'd like to see pictures but I suspect this one is one to shoot and enjoy for what it is. It may turn out to be like the rarest of the older Colt Pythons, the ones that actually show some use.

What is the barrel length?

I'll get pictures when I bring it home, I'm a 24hr clear and the FFL and my schedules won't line up until Saturday most likely.

It was advertised as a 5" barrel but I did not measure it when I looked at it. I was in and out of the shop in 3 minutes.

I would say leave it as is, though a good cleaning and something other than Goodyear grips would be a benefit.

The porting is part of the history of the gun. Yes, it reduces value. If you got it for a good price though, who cares? Like everyone else here, I'm interested in seeing pictures when it comes home!
