I think I need a 617 10-shot. Anything bad I should watch out for?

The 617 is a must if you want to improve your revolver skills, especially double action shooting. Go for it.

Maybe you'll get lucky and it's really a model 17 full lug.
I kinda doubt that. He's a collector selling off a chunk of his collection and one would think he'd know the difference. I took a good hard look at his hi-res photo and my best guess is Cerakote.

I'm guessing he wanted a Model 17-8 and this was the closest he could get. :)

617-4

Got a decent deal on a 10 shot 4" a while back and have no real complaints. I did add the WO rear sight and will probably do something to make the front sight stand out a bit more. If you come across one don't hesitate long. Most times they sell quickly when not exorbitantly priced.

I shoot a 4" with a red dot and a 6" with a fiber optic front sight both have Hogue grips. Both have 12 lb return springs. Both have locks with no problems. The lock will never stop me from buying a S&W. A Ruger with a better trigger I would love to shoot it. Not saying it's impossible but show me.

I have a 617-4 6" with a Weigand rail and a Romeo red dot. Before I put the sight on, it shot 1/2"- 1" groups at 15-25 yards off a solid rest, stock sights, with nearly any ammo I tried in it. About 500 rounds through it with the factory sights. Because of current conditions, I've not yet seen what it can do with the Romeo.

So I wandered into an LGS I never go to and sha-zam! There's a new 617-6 4" sitting there at a reasonable price: $709. Yep, I'll take it. It's in three-day leftist wait purgatory right now, but I'll have it early next week. Yeah!!

Great! You will love it!

Congratulations, as you are the only person I have heard say that a 10-shot .22LR GP-100 has a trigger that rivals S&W's.

If I could find a .22 LR GP-100 with a trigger like that, I'd pay a lot more then $400 for it.

The problem, at least for me, is that every .22LR GP-100 I've ever shot have had HORRENDOUS (IMHO) triggers, and I have yet to find one that I'd want.

I'll keep looking for that "Unicorn" GP-100 .22LR, that you seem to have found, but I won't hold my breath.

Sorry I upset you. I was surprised as well. I heard that some of the early GP .22s were problematic, so when this one came up I checked the SN and found it was only a couple months old, so I bought it sight unseen. The price was too good to pass up.

I guess they screwed up in the factory when they built it.

Funny thing, over the holiday weekend we were at camp sending a lot of lead into the ground. Side-by-side were my GP and K22 and I couldn't decide which one I liked better. Even the wife liked it.

I took one on trade couple years ago like new, 4" no holer. I did shoot it, I usually don't bother with stainless. Gun shot and functioned fine. Guy I traded it to swears by it.

I picked up my 4" 617-6 from the LGS today. I haven't shot it yet, but I really like the gun. Unfortunately, it's got a trigger only a liability attorney could love, so that'll take some working on. I've got a Weigand mini-mount and an Ade Advanced Optics mini-red dot on the way for later this week. This should be a great gun for .22 Steel Challenge.

My 617-4 10 round with 2X scope is by fay one of my favorite pieces. Loads of fun......makes me feel like a marksman, lol.

Look out for the price......they ain't getting any cheaper.

That's the one thing keeping me from buying right now. I was hoping for something in the same $400 range of the SW22 Victory pistol. All 7 of our current handguns are S&W but I may consider other brands in this case. Just looking for a shoot a lot range gun that can shoot both SA and DA with a 4" barrel.
