I didn't want to hijack the other gentleman's thread.

So here it is; I just got my first Glock, a Glock 19 Gen4.

I put 300 rounds through it so far without a single hiccup. I had rented and shot other of these before I bought it and thought it narrowly outshot my CZ 75B. And that it does...

Just narrowly though.

THE reason I like this gun as much as I do, and the reason I got it instead of an M&P, is 1. the SIGHTS. That giant rear white outline and way-bigger-than-any-other front dot does it for me. and, 2. the trigger is better, IMHO, than the M&P. (full disclosure: I had the M&P 9c for awhile.)

As far as all the 'tool' comments that abound on these guns, now I know why: the finish on the slide becomes marred, small chips, scratches, etc. INSTANTLY...before you even shoot it. As soon as you start handling it, shooting it, holstering and cleaning it the finish shows it instantly.

Anyhoo, it's reputation precedes it. Nothing more to say.

Those original sights are polymer and will shear off if you are not careful. I get Glock steel sights or night sights on all my Glocks except the gen. II Glock 17 I bought last month. It is all original, so I left it alone.

I have had my G19 Gen4 for 3 years now and the slide looks brand new. I carry it IWB, OWB, nightstand gun, lay it on the range table clean it with Gun Scrubber etc. and have none of the issues you are describing. I certainly don't baby it. Has something changed since 3 years ago with the finish?

I believe the gen 4s changed slide finishes at the beginning of their runs, but I've seen where they went back old school to their original finish...

For years and years I swore off the very idea of ever owning a Glock. Then, a few years ago, I bought a gen 4 G19 to see what all the fuss was about. Now I've got four Glocks... :). The 19 is a great carry gun, reliable, accurate, good trigger, holds lots of Gold Dots; what's not to like...?

Those of us that have been in your situation will help you get through this. The bad news is that it's gonna cost you!.......at least a few more Glocks! :)

I don't have any new Glocks so I can't help you with the finish problem. My every day carry for the last 5 years has been a G19, prior to that it was a police gun. S# dates back to 2004. If you hold it just right in the light you can sorta see some discoloration difference from rubbing inside a holster. But that's it. All my other ones are older as well

My experience follows the OP almost exactly. My CZ 75 b does outshoot the G19 but is a little to heavy to carry. Took me a long time to try the glock but will not go back to revolvers.

Based on my experience with this, my first one, I wouldn't buy another one.

They shoot good, but, IMHO, they are overpriced for what you get. But I totally get the '..just a tool..' comments to cover for the awful finish. Really it's just a polymer gun with a poorly finished metal slide...and a really good trigger and sights!

Guess we'll see.

Huh, not sure what some of you are on about. Have a Gen 3 Glock that lives in a kydex holster, has maybe 600 rounds thru it. I've installed new titanium pins, stainless steel guide rod, 3.5lb trigger bar; and never put a scratch on the slide. It still looks new, though I keep it well oiled.

Best $400 I ever spent, came with 3 mags and a holster as well. LEO designation according to the box.

Yeppers, Glocks are a tool. They were not designed to be pretty. They were designed to go bang everytime you pull the trigger. Mine always have. The basic Glocks are a combat gun, not a target gun. You get useful on target accuracy. Of course all pistols have a ammo preference. You just have to find the right round if you want better accuracy. You can have a target Glock too, but it won't be very CCW friendly.

We should start a Glocks Anonymous.
How about an 'Official S&W Forum Glock Owners' thread? :)

@tobimaru... You got an older Gen3 and all you got through it is 600 rounds? What are you waiting for?!?!? :D

My Gen2 is 25 Years old and STILL running like a champ. I even still have the original (unlined) mags for it. I lost count on how many rounds have been through it since I started carrying it back in '90.

Even my Gen4 G26, which lives in a Kydex holster has around 1K rounds through it... and the finish is still fine.

Glocks are like diesel engines... They hate to just sit... They need to be run often. :D

As for cleaning... Lock the slide back, spray some CLP down the chamber end of the barrel and run a Bore Snake through it a few times. they don't mind running 'dirty'.

The only two Glocks I ever owned, a 22 and a 19, both second generation, were bought used, but you couldn't tell it to look at them. The slide finish was immaculate, and still was when I sold them. I'm really distressed to hear that they made some with inferior finish, and I hope they realized that was a terrible mistake.

I liked both guns lot, but especially the 19.

I've got four years on my G19 Gen4, no issues whatsoever.
Many thousands of rounds through it, and it is by far my favorite carry pistol.
I love my magnum caliber wheelguns, and also my J-frames (which I pocket carry), but for IWB/OWB carry, I go for the G19.

Everyone should own a G19, they truly are the best carry platform RE size, capacity, function, etc...

Nothing wrong with that!
I own two, a 27 and a 33 and I couldn't be happier with them! ;)
The 27 I use for a CCW

My wife conned me into buying her a Glock 17 not too long ago. She doesn't shoot it a lot, but actually does quite well with it when she does.

I even fired a few rounds through it, but don't tell anyone. :o

Her's is an old cop gun. I can't tell if it's worn or not. The guy who fetched it out of the back did say he'd find her a nice one.

Boy I must have been lucky....... in the 90s I bought a Glock 19 and two 26s over three or four years and tried to "like" them......... but they did nothing for me and were just OK shooters with plastic sights.. as a long time double action revolver shooter I hated the trigger.....sure more rounds but if I'm in need of 15 or even 10 (in the 26's "short, fat butt") rounds........ then I'm in need of a rifle or my Beretta CX-4 with 20 or 30 rd magazines!!!!!

I think they all got traded for 3rd Gen Smiths.........and I felt I got the better part of the deal.......my guess is; so did the gun shops...LOL

I was much happier with a 3913 than a 26.... or a 6906 or PC Shorty 9 than the 19.......still carrying a 3913 every day and the double stack Smiths are there if I want more rounds.

In the event of TEOTWAWKI.... I'm sure I'll be able to pick one up .......somewhere !!! LOL

I bought a Glock 30 in 1999. I put 100 rounds through it. It is very accurate, utterly reliable and very soft shooting for a small gun in a large caliber. The only drawback (for me) is that I really don't like plastic guns. All it does now is take up room in my safe. For those of you who have embraced the polymer "culture," more power to you. Shoot what you like and like what you shoot.
