It's crazy how sometimes you fall into a deal. Before I stumbled into the first 629-1 I bought I almost settled on a model 25 because I didn't think I'd find a .44 Mag.

Don't know why but I too prefer the half lug models too. For the life of me I can't figure out why S&W called the full lug the classic. Seems to me the half lug should be the classic.

I'm glad they make em in square butt again.

That's good news. The 29 MG I posted here came with 1 box of factory ammo with 44 rounds left. After shooting it I understood why it was for sale, it tore up my hand. It took the S&W walnut presentation grips round to square butt before I was able to shoot it comfortably. I'd made up my mind that I would sell that gun if I couldn't find a set of grips that didn't hurt.

Don't know why but round butt guns beat me up, usually tearing up my hand to the point I start bleeding.

Because I frequented 3 different shops 2 weeks later one of the other shops told me they had just taken in a model 29-2 6" to sell. This was the gun I had always lusted for. It was in excellent shape and looked as if it hadn't really been used much.

Not only did you find what you really wanted, but you got one in fantastic shape. Also, the grain in those grips is amazing. Glad you found one!

The grips were one of the reasons I snapped that 29-2 up. I've never seen another set like that. When I handled it I didn't think it had been shot much as the action was stiff like a new gun.

The man that owned the shop told me the gun came from one of his friends that never really shot it much.

The shop where I bought it from time to time would have some pretty rare guns for sale. The owner taught me a lot about guns.

I whole heartedly agree. The grain is excellent. I have a set exactly like them that came numbered to my Model 48, or was it The 17 ? Dang , I can't remember now. I'll have to take them out of the safe and look.

Kenneu.

That ad sounds exactly like one currently in the Austin, TX area.
Here's the 29-2 6.5" I got a few months ago for $800, no box.

It is! I talked to the guy about an offer and he offered 1200 no box/tools but I couldn't bring myself to pay that... In the end, I'm about 940ish into a "classic" and I'll shoot the snot out of it. It should be here next Monday! Gotta find some ammo and I hear the grips are thinner that the original. Someone said a guy on ebay sells "replicas". Anyone have a link?

Drool. I would have snapped that up so fast it would have left a burnout mark in the glass case.

It was a private sale.

After I looked at it, the guy said lets get to the dickering. I told him his price was more than fair, and I didn't want to dicker.

After I got home, I noticed it was coated with something, probably museum wax. After I cleaned it off, it looked even better.

My local gun dealer said, if it was his, he would sell it for $1,200.

Lol! The long barrel is nice because the muzzle opening is so far away from my ears, I don't need hearing protection...

There's an 6 1/2" NIB 29-5 full under lug on GB right now, I think it's $1250. I paid $900 and change for mine, probably a bit much but it is everything that I wanted in a 44 mag and it shoots so great.
