I don't recall which Sigma series guns were the "bad" ones.

Was it he early 9mm or early 40S&W?

Don't mean to be this ignorant but I never looked at a S&W Sigma before due to the bad rap they had.

I'd have to imagine the bugs are worked out by now so which are the most reliable?

Just stay away from the ones that look like the sigma 380's.

I don't know about the older models, but the new ones (VE) rock!

First, decide 9mm or .40cal.

Once you decide, pick your favorite flavor:

Black/matte VE

Green/matte GVE

Black/Black VE (Allied Forces)

I have the .40ve and I have come to like it real well. Takes a little while to learn the trigger, but has never failed to fire in the 5yrs that I have had it. For the price they are hard to beat.

From what I understand, the VE models are supposed to have all the bugs worked out. That seems to be true with the one I've got. I like the 9mm because the ammo's cheaper, but the 40's ok too I guess if that's what you want.

My first and only Sigma is the new (1 month old) SW40VE. I love it! And 40 ammo is only a tad bit more than the 9mm. As I already have 3 9mm's, thought that I'd try the 40 and have no regrets. Of course now I've got my eye on a Sig 239 SAS in .40

I almost bought a new 9mm but having 2 40's I really don't want to worry about keeping 500 rounds of 9mm as well. I just keep 500 here for range days and such and reload as needed to keep my 500 number. The initial investment sucks but reloading helps keep the price down and I don't worry about the current panic prices.

IMHO, buy new unless you are very sure about the condition of a used Sigma. Not that they wear out quickly, but there are so many out there "improved" in ways you may not want.
Besides, a new one is only slightly more than used anyway.

I agree 100% with OKFC05.

I'm not opposed to used, but for the little difference in price plus rebate, go new if you can.

Lot's of people have monkied with their sigma trying to make something that it isn't; then, they sell it.

I've monkeyed with several Sigma's. :) Free at the range, at my desk for folks. And a 9mm/.40 for personel resale to folks that wanted them real bad done right because S & W's college boys screwed the pooch. Thinking about buying another .40 to keep to for myself,,, even though I really have no respect over all for the round.

To the OP... Just go to Academy Sport's or another reputable LGS and buy a new one, get the rebate or mag's and shoot the crap out off it.

There are deals out there on Sigma. BUT there are also rip off artist. The good NIB retail price around here is $300 to $325. The rip off artist start around $350 and go as high as $400+ for a $300 max pistol. If your not a pest and get to know a few quite FFL's and others around the business. One could be yours for $275,, maybe down to $250. Then throw the rebate in and your setting pretty even if you end up not liking the pistol.

If your dead set on a used Sigma. I would not pay over $150 for one with all paper work, lock, mag's in the box.

Bobafett-Those are the VE's-their sale price is $299.99 but it has been awhile since I've seen them for that. Academy would not order anything in the past, what ever came on the truck is what they sold, and with probable Sigma phase-out it could be interesting.

+1 buddy. I think you're 100% right. NIB will cost you maybe $50. more than a used "what the hell did this shadetree gun smith do"??? I'll hate to see VE's phased out but the SD's look like a great value. At $48. bucks over the VE list, with a Tritium front night sight standard it's pretty much a wash. I'm curious as to what they mean by a "Self Defense Trigger". Sounds a lot like salesman talk for "long and hard".

On another thread they list the trigger as 8lbs for the SD. From what I was told at academy the $299 will be back soon. They do it quite often. If the rebate comes back it's a great deal. I may still pick up a 9ve for the wife. My next S&W is a SD40 as soon as I can get my hands on one.

I do like my 40ve. Got it in March have put about 1000 rounds out of it and no problems. I have a 15 yr olg girl that loves to shoot it.

I went with the 9VE because of cheaper ammo prices. I figure the more I shoot the more accurate I will get and in a defensive situation better shot placement is going to be a better advantage over the difference in ballistics between 9mm and .40.
