If the AR is Banned what is the top defensive rifle on your list ?

I guess I've got a thing for pistol caliber carbines........ from my Winchester Trapper in .357 to my Ruger 77/357 utility rifle...... to the Beretta CX4 9mm which takes the same magazines as the Beretta 92.

I also have a couple of "varmint" rifles....CZ 527s in .223/5.56 and my second favorite walking in Penn's Woods rifle a 527 FS/mannlicher carbine;also in .223. I like the CZs detachable 5rd magazine..

That is an ugly gun.....

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder

I think it's a beautiful gun

Candidly, I've never seen any hunter use one to take game, not saying it's not possible but I've been hunting for years in many states and never seen one, ever.

What? AR15s, 10s, AKs are all a hog hunters best friends At least they are here in Texas where hogs run wild destroying people's property and there are no mag limits, or time limits, Or any limits of any kind on killing them. One of the kids out there has a an AR 10 with a thermal scope and he is a hog slaying fool. Bet he,s killed over 100 this year alone.

AR goes away? No great loss to me - After I carried one for 16 years in Uncle's Army I despise them.

My defensive rifle will be, as always, my Rossi 92 in 357 to go along with my Model 13.

Well they don't have enough jail space for us all so I think a passive resistance, non compliance operation would be a good start. For range use in such an environment I think my two M1 Garand's in 30-06 and 7.62 NATO along with my Ruger Scout rifle in .308 Win would be useful elsewhere as well.

I'm happy with my .30/30 lever. So was Custer. I don't need an AR to defend myself or family.

Frankly, I believe anything could happen with the next administration. If they want to outlaw AR-15's, they also should ban all the other items thatkill and maim people, like tools, cars and other stuff that kill.

I don't consider a 'feral hog' to be a North American game animal, more of a varmint or an invasive predator that needs to be eradicated. Sort of along the lines of Asian Carp.

Both introduced by man (or at least careless men).

A good friend of mine killed a 80 pound mountain lion with one shot from an AR-15 at a range of about 50 yards. He used an expanding tip bullet.

What the anti-gunners think would be appropriate for citizens to own:

What the citizens WILL own, authorized by the Constitution of the United States:

Are you sure the .30-30 caliber was available in the 1870s?
Of course it was. Moses used it too!

Unfortunately thec30/30 was designed long after Custer was dead....1895.

The US military use Springfield 45/70 single shot carbines

I might be straying too much into politics with this post, but here goes.

If ARs/semi autos are banned from sale, that could happen any time with the stroke of a pen.

If ARs/semi autos are banned from possession, a nationwide registration will almost certainly precede that. That's the only way it can be even partially successful, or else millions of people just hide what they have.

More on topic, if certain weapons are banned you still need something to defend yourself, your family, and your property. So you have to have "public" guns. The ARs, AKs, and 30 round mags you buried under your used oil barrel in the shed do no good when a burglar breaks in at 3am. Look no further than to Australia for this dynamic. Guaranteed there are many, many banned weapons that were never registered hidden there, but gun ownership is at an all-time high with weapons that conform to their laws.

I liked my .44 mag Winchester trapper around the house, the M1 Carbine or Ruger Mini 14 would work too. M1 Garand would make for a decent fighting rifle or M1A, not a ugly black gun either. I don't mind my Lee Enfield No.4 Mk.II if semis are out.

AK,SKS, M1, M1Carbine, L1A1 and a good old Model 12 ;)

A couple people wondered what would be the top defensive rifle if the AR is banned and can not be bought.

If they could not be bought that means I could not sell mine and have to keep them. Oh well... I'll just suffer continued ownership. But if they were lost in a boating accident I guess I'd default to my 12ga and 30-30.

AR15 and 1911... American as apple pie.

Although it has its detractors, the Mini 14 seems to make it under the radar whenever politicians and talking heads get on the topic of "assault weapons". I guess its not scary looking enough. Eventually someone is sure to notice it though. And since the question was about "defensive rifles", my 16" "Marlin Limited" 1894 in .44 Magnum might be the 'go to' gun for a one shot stop.

Just slap a little wood grain vinyl from Home Depot on the evil black parts and call it an AR15-1/2. It will take the antis 20 years or more to figure it out.

I'd consider that 'infringing'. I did read a couple a grabbers saying that getting rid of primers would do the job.

They're already doing that where I live. California just enacted a law to require back ground checks for all ammo purchases and requires ffl to sell it.

If they banned ARs, I would still have my Mini-14 as a SD/HD rifle. If Mini-14's were banned too, I would go with a Mossberg 500 or 590.

What they really want to ban is semi automatic rifles with detachable magazines. Even a 10/22 would fall victim.

Yes, I knew that. What might have been possible is that Custer carried an 1873 Winchester lever action. If so, it would have been in a heavier caliber.

That was my understanding of some of the proposals.

I was thinking a Barrett might work ;)
