If you can't beat them, make it unaffordable!

here in Indiana they increase from 25 to 40 for 4 year, but for 100 I get a lifetime permit.

Fee structure would have to be challenged as discriminatory. They'd have to show justification.

Some years back, several counties in Virginia tried to limit permits by charging extremely high fees. They got creamed in court.

I expect that Mass is trying to do several things: limit the number of out of state permits and raise money. I would imagine that the extra cost is "justified" by the additional time and effort necessary to perform criminal records checks on the out of state applicants.

A whole ten minutes per each. Aren't they spending the same amount of research time per each applicant that they did before they doubled the fees?

Raising the permit fees is simply one more lucrative revenue source for bloated state governments.

Barb, please note the "justified" before my comment about the out of state records check. Since not all states kick data into the NCIC, an actual, thorough records check would take more than ten minutes. Kinda makes me wonder about the database used for purchase background checks.

The fee is still discriminatory.

They require a BCI check from your own state along with the renewal application, as well as a copy of your home state carry permit. What's to check? Even if they have to spend a bit of time with a redundant check of their own, why make it an annual thing when all other states are good for 4 years?
